6 1/2 months and dropping bottle?
« on: August 25, 2006, 12:17:48 pm »
My lo is 6 1/2 months and has decided he doesn't want to have a bottle with  his dinner at 11.30. I struggled with him for a few days and then gave up. Couldn't make him have it for love or money. Offered before, during and after solids but no joy.

Almost to the day this started he started to wake once in the night. I give him water and he goes straight back to sleep. Not much of a problem (we'd recently emerged from 2 months of no sleep at all) but it just makes me wander if he still needs this milk.

Is he a bit young to go to 3 bottles? Hes on 3 meals a day - (started weaning at 4 months as he was always hungry baby) and he has two 7 oz bottles and one 8 oz still. he also has fromage frais and milk in food etc.

Any comments or advice would be appreicated.

I would say, if your LO is happy and not waking for the additional milk at night, then go with it. You seem to be  offering additional calcium so keep that up.

I know of lots of mums on this site who's Lo went to 3 bottles around this time.

We dropped our lunch time bottle at around this age.  DS did not seem to miss it at all.

He is propably right to do so anyway! Milk doesn't go to well witha  dinnermeal the body can't process the iron as well... or was it some vitamin? Anyway, i was told to give food seperate from dinner and just offer water, tea or unsweetened tea

My lo woke 5 times last night. HAd a few sips of water and went straight back to sleep. So not sure if it was from hunger or not.

Although he has dropped that bottle he seemed very uninterested in all his bottles yesterday and it was a real struggle with him all day, with him only really fininshing his bedtime bottle. hes recently changed to follow-on milk and I was wondering if this could be the reason. Maybe it tastes different, I don't know. Is there actually much difference between first milk and follow on? He shouldn't need less should he?

Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated.

Follow-on is more satisfiying so maybe he just feels full faster. Don't try and struggle milk into him, he will drink when he is hungry. DS had 40oz of first milk a day, when we switched to follow-on he got 20oz a day. Doesn't want anymore and that is fine. He gets another one or two oz in his cereal and he's got what he needs...

hi sorry, me again.

I'vd had another awful night with ds waking 4/5 times  :( and not settling since 4 this morning. :'( I noticed he was waking every 4 hours to start with on what would be feeding times.

This just all seems to coincide with him dropping his bottle - or maybe its me just being paranoid about that and its just bad timing. Hes only slept through once since hes gone to 3 bottles. My dh suggested going back to a dream feed but I feel this is a big step back and don't want to do it if he doesn't need it.

I'm so tired cause my dd is gettibng her last back teeth thru so between the pair of them I'm having no sleep and don't feel like I'm making any good decisions right now.  :-\ Any advice/reassurance etc would be appreciated.

I would go back to the 4 bottles, it may just have been a phase.

What times where you offering bottles before, it may just be he is NOT hungry at 4hrs, we did 4.5hr EASY for ages....

This was his routine before:

6.30/7 bottle and breakfast
11.45 bottle and dinner
3.30 bottle
5.00 tea
6.45 bottle and bed

he first started to refuse the 3.30 bottle and then switched it to the lunch time bottle, which I offered before solids. Now his solids are building up he did seem to have alot in a short space of time so I'm not suprised he refuses one

Now he has just dinner at 11.45 with water or juice and then asks for a bottle round about half two.
