Supplements for a picky eater?????
« on: August 25, 2006, 16:20:57 pm »
Hi all. Just wondering if any of you can help me. My dd is 21 months old and will only eat a very limited range of food. A typical day
Breakfast: weetabix with whole milk 1 slice of wholmeal toast or a banana
snack : wholmeal toast, fruit flakes or banana
lunch : 2 slices wholmeal bread with cheese spread, half a pack of quavers and a slice of fruit loaf
snack : cereal bar or biscuit or an apple
tea: beans on toast ( favourite) jacket potato with beans, waffles with beans , pizza with beans             ( recurring theme is beans!!!) followed by  a yogurt
supper: toast again!!

The problem is she won't eat meat of any description, she occasionally will try some but spits it out and she wont eat veggies. I always give her some of what we are having at tea time and give her something she likes. Every now and then she tries something different but won't eat it. I haev never made an issue out of it as i don't want her to see it bothers me and cause meal times to be a stressful experience. When she was weaned she ate EVERYTHING especially vegetables.

My question really is should i be worrying about the lack of protein in her diet and the lack of vitamins.?? Should i be giving her supplements

Thanks

Tracey and Ella xxx

Believe it or not, her diet is actually pretty darn good! Beans are one of the best vegetarian sources of protein, so if that's one of her favorites, she's probably doing more than fine there. As for the veggies, I've read that kids can get most of the same nutrients from fruit. Since it doesn't look like she eats a wide variety of fruits, you might try getting sneaky on her. Veggie puree was my best friend for awhile...you can try spreading it on toast, mixing it with her cheese spread, mixing it in with her beans and toast or potato, spreading it on her waffle, or using it as a "sauce" for homemade pizza (toast, veggie puree, and melted cheese on top). Oh, and it can be hidden in yogurt or smoothies too. Even if you think "ick" at the thought of mixing veggies with some stuff, like fruit yogurt, give it a try...you might be surprised what you can get away with! Even if you can't get veggies into her, it doesn't look to me like she needs a supplement.

It sounds like you have a great attitude toward mealtime!
