Milk ?
« on: August 26, 2006, 21:04:25 pm »
How much milk should a 14 month old get?
My son will drink like 6oz of juice out of a sippy but you put milk in it and he will only take at the most 1oz.
A bottle on the other hand he will take 8oz at one time.
So for the last 2 days I have been trying to just give him the sippy and no bottles.
He has only had a total of 8-10oz of milk in 2 days, if that much.

The stuff I just got frome the doc said 16oz a day for 12-15 months.  How's he for yogurt and cheese?

I've been trying to up his other dairy products.  He gets about 4oz of yogurt a day and 1-2oz of cheese.
Yesturday he took about 6-8oz of milk out of the sippy for the whole day.
But the milk out of a sippy is a hit of miss type thing.  On a good day it will be 6-8oz but normally it's only about 4oz and on bad days it's about 1-2oz.
I really want him to be getting enough but I also want to stop using the bottle.

Adria,

Have a look at this link - this will give you the minimum amount of milk he should be getting in a day.

So would you continue to give the sippy and not offer the bottle even if they are not getting this amount of milk?

I would offer him his bottle in the morning and at night, and continue offering him his sippy with milk in throughout the day.  When you notice a big improvement in the amount that he is taking from the sippy, then you can start to switch over.

Hi
My DS is 14 months and apart from with his cereal in the morning he only has milk once a day at bedtime and I still let him have a bottle as like yours he doesn't drink milk from a sippy.  Even then he'll only have between 3 and 9oz from the bottle. Not worried though as he eats yoghurt, cheese etc throughout the day.

(Actually, he doesn't like water from a sippy now either - he prefers bottles with the sports tops which are great or he trys to drink from a normal beaker which usually results in a very wet top !  ::)

thanks all!
Ya, Jency loves to drink out of water bottles but they are so big.
I'm going to try and find a 8oz water bottle and see if he'll at least take a fwe onces at meal time of milk in it.
Good luck to you too!

Adria - The other thing I have done on the days when he isn't getting alot out of the sippy (like Jency Caeden will do fine some days and rotten other days) - I'll use a cup with a straw and he'll do a couple ounces that way - he loves the straw - can't leave him alone with it unless you want a mess, but he does drink good with it!
I have heard too the 16-20 oz total inc other dairy products, as long as he's getting close I think you are all right!
