Sleeping on Stomach
« on: August 30, 2006, 20:22:02 pm »
OK, no flames please!!!  I would never put my child in any harm, but I have a question about sleeping on stomach.  My 3 month old sleeps on his stomach really well for naps.  We watch him though and make sure he is ok.  He has rolled over from stomach to back twice, but that was about 2 weeks ago and he hasn't done it since.  We have tried to get him to but he's a little stubborn!!!  ;D  He'e very strong though and can push all the way up so that his head and chest is completely off his crib when he's on his stomach.  I think if he ever got in trouble he could easily rearrange himself so he could breathe.  So my question is, can I let him sleep on his stomach at night?

My dd is 6 months and she hated sleeping on her back so she slept on her side but when she was about 4 1/2 months she started to sleep on her tummy which she sleep well and it seems to help with her reflux.
My DS used to sleep on his tummy as well.

i agree, very personal decision.  however, if you do decide to let him, make sure you remove all extra bedding out of his crib & make sure you are not swaddling.  if you live in a cold climate, some kind of sleeping bag might be a better option.

My DS has slept on his stomache ever since he learned to roll onto his stomache.  DS use to sleep on his stomach or side but once he learned to roll there was not stopping him  ;D.  Like your LO, our DS is stubborn too.  We use to fight with him and put him back on his back to sleep.  Eventually we stopped fighting with him and watched and listened to the monitor carefully when he slept.  DS  now sleeps on his stomache or back during the night.  He is an active sleeper so you won't find him in the same position in the morning.

Natalie has slept on her stomach from the get-go; the only time she didn't was for a brief period when we tried swaddling her. (NEVER seen a baby who hated swaddling so much ::))

I agree - it's a personal decision. Years ago, moms were encouraged to put babies to sleep on their bellies so they didn't choke on spitup. Now people are discovering that the more time babies spend on their tummies, the better their upper body strength is, as well as some other developmental skills, so the tide is turning once again.

For us, we read up on all viewpoints, we made our decision, and for us it's worked. Good luck with whatever YOU decide! :)
