How much at dream feed?
« on: August 30, 2006, 20:28:56 pm »
My little one has been on easy since coming home from the hospital.  We started the dream feed right away.  At 4-5 weeks he would dream feed (3 ounces) then sleep until 5 or 6 am.  He is now 10 weeks.  He is still dream feeding between 10-11pm but is waking up between 2:30-3:30am for a night feed.  I pump milk for the dream feed.  I am only able to get 3-4 ounces pumped after his 6pm feed.  He has dropped the 8pm feed.  His routine mirrors the 3 hour easy in Tracy's book.  Should he be getting more milk at the dream feed to make him last longer through the night?  I would prefer to give him breast milk as he doesn't digest formula as well.  (He was born with some bowel problems that kept him in the ICU for a few days.  The doctors felt it cleared up but I notice formula makes it difficult for him to pass gas and stool.)  Is there any suggestions on how to get more breast milk for the dream feed or am I going to have to give in to formula?

Thanks

As far as the clusterfeed & dreamfeeds go, offer as much as he'll take.  There is no "set" amount of how much it should be, it's simply to "tank" him up, simply because you want the majority of his calories during the day and you'll eventually want to cut the dreamfeed out. The amount for a dream feed can vary from the amount they take in the day and can often be hit and miss.

All babies are different, and dependant on your LO’s age, night wakings aren’t uncommon.
