help - 8.5 mo waking at night!
« on: August 31, 2006, 04:11:47 am »
Hello,
My 8.5 mo. ds has started waking in the middle of the night. My dh usually goes in and sometimes our lo will go back to sleep only to wake again in 15-30 minutes. I end up feeding our lo and then he's fine for the rest of the night. If he does wake again, he usually just needs his binkie (I know... I am wanting to wean from that wretched thing). Any wisdom would be oh so helpful!

How old is your child? 8.5mo
What’s his/her daily routine? 4 hour EASY starts at 8am
What’s nap routine? 3 books then put in crib awake
How long are naps? 1.5-2 hours
What's bedtime routine? Time? 3 books then put in crib awake @ 8-8:30pm
Do you bottle or breastfed?? bf
How much? or how long? 4 feedings a day, 3 of which are after solids
If breastfed.. one side or both?? (at each feed) both
How many wakes per night? usually 1-2 times
What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up? cranky, sleepy
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry? crying but sometimes just fussing loudly
What have you tried to settle?? yes
What do you do for A time and how long is it? 2 hours - play, run errands, read books etc.
Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones? teething (1st tooth just broke through the gum) and almost crawling
Have you introduced cereal? Why, how much, and how many times a day? (for LO’s under 6 months) yes
Do they have a prop? If so what is it? yes - binkie. i am motivated to wean but thought I should wait until this tooth comes in.
Do they have a lovie? no. but i keep trying!

When you feed at night, does he take a full feed? He may be having a growth spurt and just needs a little extra right now.

yeah, that's a great thought. it could definitely be a growth spurt. although, he geneally takes only 1 side in the middle of the night.

I noticed in your questions and answers that you commented  keeping the binky until his tooth comes in.  That could be the cause of the night waking.  I went through the same thing with my dd and low and behold a week later she slept alllllllll night and there was the tooth all bright and shiny!!!

Hang in there, it's probably just the tooth since he is doing so well on his naps and being put to sleep awake!

you might be completely right! Thank you! So, do you think that I should feed him at night then?

I agree, your LO seems to be doing really well with naps and EASY.  It's probably just that he's teething.  Give it a few days and see how it goes.

It seems like when you feed him it does soothe him so you may want to do that so you can get back to bed!  I don't know whether this would start a habit though and then you are going to have to wean him off the night feed again!  I found with my DD that as soon as that tooth popped the skin, all the bad habits that I had used over the week (anything to get some sleep) were forgotten and she went back to perfect sleeping.  Sometimes I think we have to loosen up a bit and do whatever makes mum and baby comfortable until you get over the nasty period.

Good luck...  I hope all settles down soon!

Dannymomma - Our 9mo has always slept through BUT the past 2 nights she stirs at 5am and cries at 5:30 and she NEVER did this.  I shh her and re-binky at 5 - but she cries and NEEDS her milk at 5:30.    I may try w2s at 4...since she used to wake at 6 and not really want to eat till 6:30 or so...but alll of a sudden we have a bump in the road.  I was thinking teeth - she has 8 already but I see HUUUUGE lumps at the molars and canines.   She had all 8 by 6months :o.    I was also thinking the GS as well......good to see that it might be just that.  See you in the birth club thread.
