night waking and settling to sleep
« on: August 31, 2006, 10:59:04 am »
We have a 7 week old breast fed boy, he has settled into 2 hourly feeds - to the second day and night. This is tolerable - his weight gain is spot on- but the issue is settling him to sleep. We have been on EASY for a week now, and prior to finding the routine in the book, had more or less followed this naturally aside from sleep and breast association. Ed sleeps in a natures nest cot, a bouncy hammock, which he loves to settle in and has now got a dummy to go with the swadling which has made for a calmer young man.

The big problem is the transition into sleep from being settled and staying asleep. He grunts and wakes a great deal from his 1 am feed through to the 5 am feed, when I am usually exhausted and feed on my side in bed, we both dose off and then its back on track for the 7am start to day. He is capable of falling asleep unaided - he did this first time yesterday for the days naps, but as we had to go out got overtired and then refused to settle into his late afternoon nap.

I have tried to extend the feed times, even used formula or breast and formula mix, but it stays at 2 hours whatever we try.

What more can I do to aid the transition to sleep? am using shh pat and it goes on and on and on sometimes into the next feed. HELP!

The key is to avoid overtiredness - once that point is reached, settling is soooo much harder. A 7 week old hardly has any skills yet for sleeping, much less self-soothing. Keep up with the shhh/pat, and he will learn.  ;)

Indeed keep with pat/shh and be consitent as well as persistence. It can take a while for it to work at first. The key is finding the way that works best for your LO. Keep nighttime calm and avoid diaper changes, extra light, or anything overly stimulating. At night time don't worry so much about feeding to sleep. At night there is no A time, just ESY (Y being sleep for you  ;) )

after the longest shh pat day ever, we got a full night of feed and sleep, and staying asleep until next feed! with Ed in his bed!! we are now keeping a diary to remind ourselves that its getting better. Now to sort out shh pat with naps.

Are long pram walks advisable for one nap instead of shh pat with the cot? or stick to pure routine for a while?

thanks for advice x

Stick with the routine for a while. The pram will very quickly become a prop and then you would have to wean that.
