Less Milk In One Breast
« on: August 31, 2006, 12:32:30 pm »
My 9 week old nurses on both sides and almost always empties them both. I alternate which one she begins eating on with her 3 hour EASY routine. At night I have been pumping for the dreamfeed (only way to get her to take it) and I've noticed that my right side has more than twice the amount of milk (normally my left will be about 1 oz and my right will be between 2 & 3 oz.). Is this normal?

It's not unusual at all for one breast to produce more than the other.  My breastfeeding mentor friend had a situation similar to yours.  I have it, too, although my supply is not *quite* double on one side (but close!).  I'd say as long as your dd is getting what she needs from you, don't worry.   :D  BTW, her emptying your breasts is a good thing.

Hi there!

It sounds like you and your lo are off to a wonderful start!

I noticed the same thing as you!  Although when DS got older my breasts switched and suddenly the one that use to have less milk suddenly had more!   It is very common, not to worry!

with ds#1 my right gave lots more (probably 2x) than my left & he had a preference for the right.

With ds#2 he has always had preference for the left & actually stopped feeding from the right at about 9mo & now at 15mo just feeds from the left... I pumped less with ds#2 & mainly only from the right side, so not sure if it supplies more or less this time around, but get the feeling this time around my right was the lower producer

Um - the only way I could ever figure out if my breasts were empty were to try to pump afterwards. I never could 'feel' it.
BTW this has the added benefit of giving you a small milk collection all day (I used to get about 1/2 oz extra per breast, per feed) and then you can pump again just before you go to bed and your DH can give a dream feed.
Was fantastic going to bed at 8 for a while to catch up on needed sleep.

well, now i feel more normal...unfortunately i returned the hospital pump i was renting.  couldn't wait to be rid of it actually...between nursing and pumping during the end of 2nd month and beginning of 3rd i was really not enjoying the bf (it was overwhelming).  supplementing with a daily bottle of formula (slow progression up to 3 now) and getting rid of the pump saved our bf relationship :-*   of course now i have the constant q's...did he get enough to eat on the boob, am i still making enough, did he empty the boob.....had those same q's before though.  i do take comfort in the 3 bottles a day...peace of mind really if i'm leaving the house (to know he had a full feed before we get in the car  ;D
