Refuses solids at 9 mth - how much milk?
« on: September 01, 2006, 04:00:19 am »
My 9months old DD hardly eats any solids during the day, and then at night wakes up and won't go back to sleep without 8 ounces of milk. The time  changes from night to night, it can be 4am,3am or2am. After the night feed she sleeps till 6.00/6.30 without problem.

I'm wondering if  I should feed her more milk during the day, but than she will most probably refuse all the solids.
Our routine so far:

6.30 bf
8.00 fruit&cereal (usually she eats quite well)
9.00 - 11.00 nap
12.00 veg (about 3-6 teaspoons)
3.00 milk (4-6ounces)
3.30-4.30 nap
5.30 veg+meat (about 2 teaspoons), if I give her milk afterwards drinks it without problem
7.00 bf
7.30 bath
8.00 milk with cereal (8ounces) & bed

I think we are going to change it to one nap 11.30 - 14.00/14.30 since it seems more suitable for her.

This looks pretty good to me. Has she always woken for a feed at night or is this just a new thing?

Yeah, for quite a long time she woke every 3hrs for bf. Then at about 5months I managed to eliminate
the 1am one. She still had the 10pm DF. When trying to get rid of the 4am feed I found out that if I don't feed her at that time she sleeps till 5/5.30 at most, if I do I can enjoy my warm bed till 6.30/7.00.

So the longest she managed to go sleeping witout feed was 8pm-5am.
Last week we got rid of the paci, so it could also somehow influence our nights. But it surprises me since after only 2 days falling asleep witout the paci was no problem, and night wakings are getting worse with time

Ok could you try and up the amount you give her for dinner? Would she prefer to feed herself? Have you tried finger food? Could she be teething? Has she also eaten these amounts at solids? Sorry for all the questions just need to get a look at the whole picture first.

Right,
After a lot of trial and some mistakes, I think we've got it quite right.
I extended the breaks between the meals so that she is more hungry, and much more willing to open her mouth for solids, what's more I started giving her milk after each meal. As a result at night either she wakes just once for a bottle (we are working on that) or wakes several times (could be due to teething), but than I manage to put her back to sleep without feeding, quite easily. 6.00 is now our waking time.

Now our feeding routine is as follows:

6.30 bf
8.00 fruit&cereal, followed by 4ounces of milk
12.30 veg+meat, followed by 4ounces of milk
5.00 veg+meat, some yogurt
7.00 bf
7.30 milk with cereal (8ounces)

I find it much better, since she eats all, with no trouble, and sleeps much better.
