does your toddler wake in a horrible mood?

dd is almost 21 months now.  whenever she wakes up in the morning or from her nap, she is in the WORST mood for about 30-45 mins.  everything makes her cry.  i try to be very gentle and calm when she wakes, giving her snacks, cuddles, juice, whatever she seems to want.  but nothing makes her happy, she keeps crying.

if your toddler wakes like this, how do you handle it?  lately i've been driving her around in the car after she wakes to give her some time to 'chill out', but this is getting old.

Lately she wakes from the pm nap unhappy.  If she takes one that is.     She won't let me put her down, but does not really want to be held either.  I chalk it up to "I am 1.  'Nuff said."  But I'd love any ideas!!

yes, yes, yes, it is driving me insane, i used to also jump into the car and go, not possible any more, it is far worse if baby is awake

If Charlotte has a nap, then she will normally wake up in a foul mood, unless she has woken on her own and I have left her to come round on her own, then usually she will be much sweeter.  Having said all that, I just try to avoid naps now, it makes bedtime SO much easier.

If she has a nap (usually near to tea-time  ) and I wake her because her tea is ready, then she is terrible.  I find it best to hide - for my own safety!

Harvey mostly wakes in a bad mood if he naps. He only naps every few weeks now because he seems better without it, but he is almost 3 now.

When he napped everyday though, i used to pull my hair out with how grouchy he could be after. I did find that he was worse after he had a long nap and would be in a mood for a good hour and mope around like he didn't want to wake.

YES!!!!!!!!!!  she is mostly crying the whole time, and randomly asking for things such as juice, snack, go byebye, etc.  if i give her the juice or snack or whatever she wants, she cries more and throws it.      (i can't hit that 'rolling eyes' button enough times)  anyhow, that is the most annoying part is that not only is she crying, but when she asks for things and i give them to her, it turns into a mini-tantrum.  and if i don't give her what she is asking for....

heck, I'M like that in the morning.     i've noticed, though, that jaina is the same way when we wake her up.  if she wakes up on her own, she has time to adjust to being awake before she comes & finds us. 

but if we wake her up, watch out!  she cries & yells & is all sorts of cranky.  i really can't let her nap anymore, or this will happen.  (screws up bedtime too).  i can usually distract her with food, but if that doesn't work i really just have to leave her to her own devices, make sure she doesn't try to go back to sleep, and let her work her way up to being awake.

harrison is only like this if I wake him up, and i suppose I can relate, because if I've been woken from a deep sleep, or have ever napped in the pm then it actually makes me feel slightly ill to be woken up! I guess they feel groggy.

I sit and snuggle with H on the sofa and let him watch his favourite Pocoyo for 15 minutes or so until he comes round a bit more. I also give him a "yoghurt" drink at that time too, which is special to that time of day and it seems to help. After about 30 minutes (sometimes sooner) he is ok.

Mornings are normally ok unless he is overtired and wakes crying. If that's the case I know he needs to catch up and get him into bed a bit earlier for his nap and bed.

Yup...Tyler is a total grump almost every morning. No rhyme or reason to it, that's just how he is. He wants to have all the time in the world to lay there in his bed after he wakes up and it's soooo hard to get him moving. I'd love to just leave him be to wake up while I go start the morning, but he insists that I stay with him. Once he starts getting agitated and riding the train to tantrumville ANYTIME, morning or not, he also does the random and bizarre demands game. Up, down, mommy stay, mommy go, want milk, put milk away, etc and screaming louder if I'm dumb enough to actually do what he tells me.

Yes, Alex wakes really grumpy, especially from her naps.  I just sit and cuddle her if I can, and we put the telly on to take her mind off it.  Sometimes, I can't even sit down, I have to walk around with her (bad back) and she sometimes wants to just sit and if I put my arm around her, she pushes it away.  Nothing seems to help, drink, snack, cuddles, urgh, miserable old grump! I must admit that I just thought that she was following my side of the family, we are all really grumpy in the mornings.  And look out if she is woken out of her sleep, she is grumpy for ages then.

Both of mine often wake grumpy and i too feel like hiding! Sometimes distractions work but mostly i just bear with it and eventually they cheer up.

I was just coming to post this same thing.  Carmela is a TERROR when she wakes from her nap lately, she was never like this!!!!!!!!!!  And with her it lasts like an hour or more!  I can't take it.  She whines, cries, tantrums the entire time  

She's not like this in the morning, thank God!

Ryan is fine in the morning , he can't wait to get out of bed.Nap time he's o.k if he wakes from his nap on his own , if i have to wake him to protect bedtime them he can be very grouchy it takes ages to get him down and then he just wants to cuddle up on my knee .
