When do you invert bottle and solids?
« on: August 27, 2006, 17:58:17 pm »
When do you change the order of giving bottle then solids to solids then bottle? My son is turning 7 month this week and has been eating since he was 14 weeks. He is now on finger foods.

Thanks
Martine

I still give Calum milk first, but saying that he is only on 2 bottles a day now.

How many bottles do you give a day?

Four. One at 7, 11,3 and 5. In the morning he takes 7oz. The it varies between 4 and 5 oz for the rest of the day. He eats three meals a day.

Breakfast is usually 2 tbls of cereal, fruit (or veggie depending on new intro) and fruit finger food.
Lunch will be one ice cube of meat, two-three tablespoon of fruit and/or veggies, occasionally rice,  baby biscuit as finger food
Dinner another 2 tbls of cereal, cooked veggies or pasta as finger food, 1 ice cube of veggies

The menu varies but it's pretty much what going on now. Do you think I should drop a bottle? Which one?

Only drop to 3 bottle when your LO starts to consisyently refuse the 11 or 3pm feeds. You would then feed at 7, 1.30pm (ish) and 5. The 2nd bottle depends on the after noon nap, generally try and fit the 2nd bottle in before the nap but don't feed to sleep.

I only dropped to 3 when Calum instigated and and started fussing with his afternoon bottles. I would continue to offer milk then solids until the drop, then t doesn't matter so much and you do something like this;
7am milk + breakfast
10am snack
12 lunch
1.30pm milk
4pm dinner
5pm milk

I have to admit he is taking less and less at the 11 and 3 pm bottles for the last few days. Our current routine is as follows:

7am bottle
7:30 solides
9:ish nap
11 bottle
12 lunch
1 nap
3 bottle
5 bottle
5:30 dinner
7 bedtime

When dropping a bottle do they tend to take more of the  three bottles?

Yes, in Calums case he did increase the rest of the bottles.

I have to admit that I'm a bit unsure of taking a bottle out. It's probably just me. How old was Calums when you reduce the bottles per day? What type of snack do you give Calums at 10? Is it just after he wakes from his nap?

Hi
Calum was about 7.5/8months, I could have done it earlier but like you I was unsure and he was ill just before that.

It went really well, I usuall give things (with calcium) like; yogurt, custard, toast with cream cheese, etc.....

Calum does wake until 11am from his first nap, so it is too near lunch for him to have a snack, I just brought his lunch forward tomporarily to 1100/1130 rather than 1200.  It is now back to 1200 again.

If he always naps at 1pm, try lunch at 11am then bottle just before 1pm nap, but never feed to sleep. Does your LO eat dinner with you?

7am bottle
7:30 solides
9:ish nap
11 lunch + water or diluted juice
12:30 bottle
1 nap
3 snack + water or diluted juice optional
5:30 dinner + water or diluted juice
6:30/6:45 bottle
7 bedtime

Yes, he eats all his meals with us, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I am seriously thinking about it, I guess I have to get a bit more comfortable with the whole idea.

Thanks

Well we gave it a go today. It was ok. He ate half a cup of yogourt and was a bit grumpy until lunch. He did take the full bottle at 3 (7oz) but only took 4oz at 5. So today he only took16oz. That's not enough right? I know it's a food question but should I reduce the amount of food in order to give him more milk?

Is 16oz the total amount over 2 or 3 bottles?

I thinnk the 5pm bottle is too close to the 3pm bottle - have you tried giving it about 18:30 instead. He won't be hingry at 5pm if he just had one at 3pm

yes, that was 16 oz for the three bottles. We went back to our previous feeding of 4 bottles and decreased a bit his food intake to increase the formula intake. Rereading your posts, I should probably have given him lunch at 11 and gave the bottle at 12:30 before the 1pm naptime.

18:30 is a little late, normally we start the bedtime routine by then sometimes earlier.

I guess I am all confused about what amount of solids to give in order to ensure the correct formula intake (hard as he is hard to fill and when he is full he won't take the next bottle at all, but that's a whole other ball game.
