8 months old, still has 3 bottles at night!
« on: September 04, 2006, 05:54:57 am »
okay, so the problem is that my son is having trouble sleeping more than 3 or 3.5 hrs at night.  when he wakes he wants a bottle and takes a whole feed. i know he is waking out of hunger but its because he not takeing much in the day due to the fact that he has 4 oz at night every time he wakes so much of his meel is at night. its like he has the day for night delima with the food instead of sleep.

How old is your child?
       8 months old

What’s his/her daily routine?
he wakes up at 7 am and goes on a 4 hr routine with bedtime as early as 6:30 and as late as 7:30

What’s nap routine?
he has 2- 4 naps a day depending on things we need to do or on if hes tired or not

How long are naps?
they go anywhere from 45 min to 2 hrs, but usually somewhere in the middle.

What's bedtime routine? Time?
bedtime is about 7 pm but sometimes earlier and sometimes later than that.

Do you bottle or breastfed??
         bottle feed (and solid feed)

How much? or how long?
4-5 oz at a time, sometimes 3 if not that hungry. he has a bottle at 7am, 11 am , 3 pm and 7 pm with babyfood of about 1-2 oz in between each meal with fingerfoods.

how many wakes per night?
3 plus one at 10 pm which he shouldnt be having now.

What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up?
if i feed him, (always) its not bad at all. he just wakes up fussy and by the time the bottle is ready he is crying. he eats in a matter of minuits and is asleep in seconds.

When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry?
i dont know what his mantra sounds like to be honest.

What have you tried to settle??
less in his bottle at night (doesnt work, sometimes makes him wake more often)
water (wont drink it and cries till i give him formula.)
          waterd down bottle, (doesnt work)
puting him back to sleep(wakes up every few min. till i give him a bottle to finish.)
feed more in the day (wont take more)

What do you do for A time and how long is it?
he plays on his own a lot but when i play with him is gentle. dad is pretty rough though

Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones?
          no

Have you introduced cereal? Why, how much, and how many times a day? (for LO’s under 6 months)
          hes over 6 mo.

Do they have a prop? If so what is it?
pacifire but he can use it by himself now so it isnt an issue.

Do they have a lovie?
not yet but i am trying to give him one! :)

i have an update. last night i was determined to get him off of the night wakings. so i did wake to sleep. i couldnt get him to go without the 10 fee last night, but with the wake to sleep i was able to keep him asleep for 7 hours!! he then woke up at 4:30 wanting his bottle. i trie getting him back to sleep, but since he hadnt ate much the day before (he wanted all of the bottles at night) and he skiped a feed, i decided to wait till tonight to get him to go without that one becuase i thought i was starving the poor guy. its going good though!! even if i cant get him to skip those other feeds yet, 7 hours is good with me!

Is he waking at the same times and not taking too much each time - it could be a habit thing.  When my lo wakes at night I try him with the paci first to see if it's a comfort thing but if he still won't settle then I give him a bottle and he will drain pretty much all of it.  It took a few nights but now I just give him the paci and its enough

skibbit,

There's a sticky in the FAQ section on ending night feeds, have you read it? My main suggestion though is to keep his routine consistent. It doesn't sound like there's a lot of consistency right now and LOs really thrive on that. I think it would help to cement the naps and bedtime.

all that work finally paid off! last night  he ate at 7:30 and then woke up hungry at 10:30. we fed him at that time and he fell asleep and slept untill 6:30 in the morning!! he stirred at the time that he was awake the night before but i didnt even have to go in once! (okay, i did, but he wasnt wanting attention and wasnt wanting a bottle. in fact he was still half asleep.) he was curled up in the corner with his nighty all the way up to his shoulers and uncovered with his pacifyer in the middle of the crib. hey at least his diaper was still on! when i fed him at 7:30 he was naked! i cant figure out how he did that! lol! hope tonight goes as well as last night!  :D

Still though, that's improvement all the same! That's great that he didn't take as long to go back to sleep! He's learning!  ;D
