Dropping btls?!
« on: September 04, 2006, 10:42:55 am »
OK today  i was speaking to my HV (pnd group) with some other mums and happened to mention that DD still has her milk in a btl  and its formula not cows milk.
she seemed to have a problem with this in reagrds to DDs age that she should be dropping btls in favour of a cup ::) not that its affecting her appetite.
i said we are starting to transiton on to cows milk now by substituting an oz of formula for cows milk but was a bit delayed on this as DD had a really bad stomach upset and thought it best to wait.
but i really can't see the problem with DD still having btls. she drinks other drinks out of her cup which does on her own-she just will not drink milk out of her cup!!.(she only has 2 btls now).plus shes quite competent with a spoon etc so i don't really think her development is being impaired :o

Anyway does anybody else still use btls and what age did your LOs stop using them. do you feel i'm being pushed into dropping the btl??

Ben is 19 months and still has 3 bottles a day.  Like your dd he will take other drinks from a variety of cups and can even drink from a straw, but as far as he's concerned his milk has to come in a bottle.  ::)  Personally I have no problem with it.  If your instinct tells you that it's OK then I don't see that there should be a problem.

I think my DS and Sasha are about the same age.  He is still on one nighttime bottle.  I think, as long as she knows how to use a sippy cup and gets fluids in other ways...than it is fine to still be on 2 bottles for her formula.

The bottle we give DS is his nighttime bottle and we put cow's milk (Lactaid) in it.  He has been completely off formula since 13 months, but sometimes I wish he was still on it because of all the extra nutrition they get.

Could your HV be concerned that Sasha is not getting enough Calcium???

My little one still has two bottles a day; one before her nap and one before bed. All other liquids she is happy to take from a sippy cup.. I was very stressed out about this question too and asked my ped. about it he said to not even give it a second thought and that most babies drop the bottle by the age of two anyway ( that is what Tracy says also). Just make sure that the baby does not fall asleep with it ( teeth decay) and it does not interfere with the eating then I would not worry about it.

tdr's mom
no she's not concerned about the calcium intake as Sasha has plenty of other dairy products such as yoghurts, cheese etc. its just that she thinks DD should be drinking EVERYTHING in a cup.
i'm not concerned as i she drinks other drinks out of her cup and she doesn't use them for comfort like when you see toddlers permanantly with btls in their mouth.

I too still give Thomas 2 bottles - He likes it and I love it as we get that extra snuggle factor.

Have a look at this link - Too old for a bottle - Taken from the Baby Whisperer Solves all your Problems - Page 127

Thanks Paula

I had read that a few mths back so was not really worried about DD being on btls esp as she is so proficient with her straw cup and spoon feeding her self. it just seems in the uk that HVs are desp for you to get them off btls by the time they are 1 ::)

Here is the reason why they want you to drop bottles, mainly toothdecay
