What do you do at Dinner Time?
« on: September 09, 2006, 23:26:07 pm »
My DS is 6.5 months old and only has 2 meals of solids a day (breakfast and lunch).  At dinner, when we are eating, he is really fussy.  We can sometimes give him a carrot, celery, or something else to suck on (he doesn't have any teeth yet) which keeps him busy for a while.  Mostly, he is curious about what we are eating and is therefore cranky.  I don't want to give him solids at that time yet as our dinner time is usually close to his last BF so I don't want him filling up on solids first.

Anyone have great ideas for entertaining him?

When we tried to keep our LOs occupied, we put them in the highchair and gave them something to play with that they only got at that time-some ideas:a ring full of measuring spoons, plastic measuring cups (also on a ring), wooden spoons, bowls, cups for stacking.

PP had a great idea w/ the measuring spoons, etc.  I also will give dd a toy to play with that she only gets at dinner time. I know you don't want your son to fill up....but, the little gerber fruit puffs work MIRACLES for keeping my daughter occupied and happy.

If it continues to make him upset, how about eating your meal after he's has his last bf - either with him there or after he's gone to bed (this is what we did with ds at that age)? It will change soon again enough when he is eating a meal at that time. Or maybe tag team where only one of you is sitting down to eat at that time. There will be plenty of time to model family meal time if that is your aim.

DD generally spent mealtimes in her Exersaucer or jumper at that age.  That way she was near us and in the room but had something to occupy her as well.  Didn't work all the time, but did work enough to make most mealtimes a more pleasant experience (as long as we ate fast!)
