Different wake-up times each morning?
« on: September 10, 2006, 08:13:07 am »
Does a different wake-up time each day (usually between 6.15am and 7.30am) affect EASY? I never wake my DS, I just let him wake naturally (we both need the sleep!), however I have read alot of posters say that they wake their LO at a set time every day to get their routine 'on time.'

I am on a 3.5-4hr EASY with my DS, and just wonder if his lack of sleep during the day (he is a 45 min wonder) and night waking(s) could be attributed to this differing start time to the day.

Thanks in advance  ;)

I had the same problem earlier. My LO's wake-up time used to be from 5:30 to 7:00 and started our day according to her wake-up time. It didn't work out. Sometimes, she became restless when it's her bedtime. Her internal clock was a little mixed up.
Anyhow, I then decided to set the wake-up time and bed-time. Life has become much more easier.
Find a wake-up time that works for you and your family. My ped. told me the best bedtime for young babies are from 6:30-7:30. Babies tend to sleep better if they're put to bed around that time. (No later than 7:30)

Thanks Litomi - I have the bedtime sorted, now I just need to get us up in the morning!!! Did your Ped say anything about how long you should 'expect' your LO to sleep. I kn ow it is different for all LO's, but I read somewhere bedtime usually follows 12 hrs after wake-up. So if bedtime is usually 7.30, the wake-up should be around the same time? If only he would sleep till 7.30 each and every morning :-)

I try to wake up my LO around the same time each morning to try to keep our day and his internal clock on a regular routine.  I found that if I let him sleep in and let him naturally wake up it would throw our feeding, naptime and bedtime off.  Sometimes even causing him to have a hard time going down for his naps and nighttime sleep.  I agree with litomi, life becomes much easier if you have a set wakeup time and bedtime.  Young babies should have a 12 hour day, so if you decide to have a 7am wakeup time, LO should be put down to bed by 7pm or sooner if he gets tired sooner.

Shellha,
I think this post may help you determine the amount of sleep your LO needs.  It did help me.

I agree with TJ's mum. Read your LO's cues... if he's a 45min. wonder and if you see him exhausted around 6:30, just put him in bed earlier.
My LO wakes up early sometimes, maybe an hour earlier than her wake-up time. This is the most awkward timing, hard for me to put her back to sleep after feeding (having slept for 101/2 hrs already). If she's ready, I'll then start the day.
Just keep a rough record of when your LO wakes up in the night. Sometimes, you can find a pattern... either wake-up hungry or habitual wake-up. I know my LO often wakes up around 4, hungry. Then I usually do a 2 DF around 3 to help my LO stretch her sleep.

i would have to agree with all the advice givin so far. i think its best to let the lo sleep about 12 hours at night before a year old, but make sure its more about your baby than the clock. watch your babys cues. make a log if it helps. keep track of when you see sleepy times and just let him set the schedual for about half a week and keep track of how your baby responds to naps and nighttime, and feeds and how he is affected by everything that goes on. then you will start to see a pattern emerge. you will begin to see that your baby may do better depending on cirtain circumstances. if not, wait a few more days and then try to figure it out. you might see that he always gets tired at a cirtain time or gets fussy if he has less than x amount of food/sleep ect... hope this helps! :D

was wondering the same thing about nighttime and waketime.  it varied one hour either way sometimes after being the same for a month or more.  i was torn between letting ds sleep or should i wake him up...absolutely right about the bedtime...anything later than 7:30 guarantees misery in the night or next day :(
