Squashes
« on: September 12, 2006, 02:30:19 am »
Does anybody know which squashes are considered summer and are winter?  I have a baby food recipe calls for summer squash but I'm not sure which squash to use.  Any ideas?

BTW, do you peel the skin off of zuchinnis and yellow squash?

"Zucchini, yellow crook or straight neck, and patty pan, are among the more common summer squashes and some of the more common types of winter squash are: Acorn, Butternut, Buttercup, Delicata, Spaghetti, and Calabaza"

I got that info from a gardners website.. hope that helps.

thanks...actually i had sorta the same question.

i guess though...are all squashes alike??  what i mean is...if i do winter squash and there is no allergies, do i have to feed the summer squashes in the same way to test for allergies??

it might be a dumb question...but im all about those!  ha!

Samijoe, you're funny! ;D

My doc told me to test out the following squashes:
zuchini and butternut

I think it's mainly for the colour, I don't think you have to test them all out individually.

HTH,
Nay

I'm testing those zuchinni, butternut and yellow squash.  I hear butternut is suppose to be a favourite for LOs as it's really sweet and I'm doing the zuchinni and yellow for variety.

You should peel the butternut squash (for steaming), but not the zucchini- it's nutrients are in the skin. Clean it thoroughly though! I always bake my butternut squash in its skin and then scoop the flesh out.
