When did your LO feed themselves with cutlery?
« on: September 14, 2006, 20:16:30 pm »
Rachel hasn't been at all interested in using the spoon herself until yesterday when suddenly she snatched it (with dramatic yoghurt flying effects) and then managed to feed herself the rest of it quite well.  and then today she did the same with her yoghurt and even tried with her main course with mixed success and a bit of frustration on her part.

so my question - is she early?  late?  I am encouraging it if she wants to but is this right?

My dd's been feeding herself from around 12 mths (didn't have much choice, as she rejected spoon feeding at that age) At first, almost nothing ended up in her mouth, and she'd grab it with her fingers,  now she's pretty much got the hang of it at 17 mths . btw whereabouts in Reading do you live? I've just moved to Caversham!

I can't remember when Ciara started using cutlery.  IMO thou, I would take your lead from your lo, she is obviously ready and interested so now is the best time!

Also, don't become discouraged if she still wants to use fingers.  Ciara is over 3 now and still wants to use fingers sometimes!  As long as the food is in the belly ...  ;D

Sounds like she is right on track to me.  My son was older, but he didn't everything eating related later than normal.  I think, according to those baby books about development, that your girl is beginning self-feeding at just the right time.  Go Rachel!  8)

Zander has just this week started to want to feed himself with his spoon (he usually feeds himself but with his hands!).  He needs help to load it but does the rest himself.  I actually think it's something he's picked up from watching the other children at nursery.
