How to increase minutes
« on: September 15, 2006, 02:23:48 am »
I feel silly asking this but I want to increase the calories my DD takes during the day to help her sleep longer at night.  She seems to bf for 4 - 10 minutes (it varies with each feed).  I have seen the suggestion to increase the minutes on the breast but I don't know how to get her to continue eating after she comes off.  When I try she gives me the pouty lip and won't latch on again or eat.  I appreciate any suggestions.  TIA

I'm not sure how old your dd is. Back when my dd was quite young and I was forever worrying about her getting enough and supply I would sometimes pop her back on the first side (I fed both sides and never pumped) and she would take some more. If your dd is continuing to pull off and not take more yet is happy/content I'd say she's full and doesn't want more. I would suggest a cluster feed in the evening and a dream feed, but again, not sure the age of your dd.

Whoops...DD is 3 months actual, 1 month corrected.  I have been told to treat her like a 1 month old but sometimes it is hard because she has been around for longer.

She has enough wet and dirty diapers so I don't really worry about her getting enough at each feed.  I feed single side.  We would love for her to sleep longer at night so that was the idea behind the question.  She usually wakes at 2am and 6am to eat.  I do DF at 10:30 pm.  I haven't found that cluster feeding makes a difference but maybe I should try it again.  Thanks!!

This may not make you feel any better but for a one month old  baby four hour intervals at night are pretty standard - in fact would be envied by some. (I was not getting that).
I would also suggest you try cluster feeding.
During the day if she's satisfied at the end of a feed then there's not always a lot you can do. You could try again after a short interval.

Emma - Thanks for helping to make me feel better.  I am trying to get her to sleep more but I guess I need to be patient.
