Breastfeeding on an MSPI diet?!?!
« on: September 16, 2006, 10:34:29 am »
My daughter has bad reflux and meds don't seem to be helping. Her pead has now suggested trying a milk/soy free diet and if this doesn't work trying a low allergy formula.
I don't want to give up bf if i can avoid it but i know this diet will be hard as everything seems to have either milk/soy in it.

So trying to look after a crying, not sleeping, unhappy baby and preparing foods  is gonna be hard.

I'm in the UK and can't seem to find any good lists of 'safe foods' does anyone know any?

Otherwise should i stick to rice(is this even safe?!) and veggies!!

Arrrgg i don't know where to start but i'm hungry already as i seem to have nothing in the cupboards to eat!

I've got to dash now but can I give you a couple of things to read incase you haven't already found them:
http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/reflux.html
http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/lactose-intolerance.html
http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/lactose.html
http://breastfeed.com/resources/articles/lacintolerance.htm

Sorry my post is a bit impersonal!

This is a subject close to my heart as I have a good friend who gave up bf and switched to 'lactose free' formula and now after extensive research resents what happened to her immensely.

I wish I'd seen this post earlier!  Hope you haven't given up yet--you can totally do it!

I don't know if you've checked out the sticky at the top of this Forum for MSPI--Stacy put up a great list of things you can/can't have.  There have been quite a few of us who have continued to bf our babies with MSPI--I did so for 14 months and while it was hard sometimes to give things up that I love (like cheese), I actually found enough fun treats that I was able to stick to it :D  Actually, I didn't lose any weight on the MSPI diet because I got totally hooked on eating tortillas with peanut butter and chocolate chips melted in them--talk about a high calorie snack!  But I figured I deserved to eat whatever I wanted that I was allowed since so many foods were off limits.

If you haven't already, join in the discussion on the MSPI thread!  It helps so much to know other people are going through it with you!
