Toddlers also don't gain so much - weight gain really slows down after the first year.

Today was a good day:

- Breakfast: 3 ounces milk, 2tbsp oatmeal (made w/ one ounce milk) mixed with 2 ounces apples/cherries. handful cheerios, handful banana/pineapple bites
- Morning snack: half hard pretzel in stroller, diluted juice
- Early lunch: 3/4 of half grilled cheese sandwich, veggie booty, 3 ounces milk
- Afternoon snack: 3 ounces milk, handful (15-16 pieces) whole grain goldfish. hour later more diluted juice
- Dinner: 1 ounce milk, 1 1/4 Purdue chicken nugget, two tiny bites meatloaf, one tiny bite steamed carrot (!), 3/4 jar of EB turkey vegetable dinner
- Bedtime: 3 ounces milk

I'm so happy that she even tried one tiny bite of the steamed carrot. I steamed them using some brown sugar in the water and then cut them tiny and added a bit of salt. I think she might have had more but they were still a little too slippery. Must keep experimenting. Plus she is getting closer to self feeding with a spoon - she does try now and is happy when she manages to get any in. Heaven forbid you try to help her though.

Well Zach goes in for his Upper GI on Monday morning.  I am nervous now.

Any advice:  He cannot eat or drink after 5:00 a:m, so shoud I wake him at 4:45 and give him a cup of milk and hope he goes back to sleep or just let him sleep until 7:00 and leave to go to the doctor.  His appt. is at 8:30 that morning.  I just know he will throw a fit because he will be hungry and thirsty...
?????

Thanks,
Wendy

An upper GI is a good first step. Unfortunately, it is mainly used for showing structural abnormalities and isn't the best indicator of how severe reflux is (an endoscopy is much better for that and would also be able to show allergies). But it's still a good first step. If it were me, I'd probably do a dream feed style feed at 3 or 4am and then let him sleep untinl 7 if he can/will.

Good luck with the Upper GI Wendy let us know how it goes.

Marisas mum...an endoscopy shows allergies? I never knew that. Im looking at finding out if Jakob has allergies or intolerances but was thinking of going to a naturopath.Ive had an endoscopy...do they sedate children for it?

Hey Kirsty:  They will sedate your child for the endoscopy (but a very small amount) :(  SAD.

If our Upper GI does not show anything, I think I will ask to have this done.
He has been to an allergist and it showed he was allergic to Soy, Dust Mites and Oak Tree Pollen, but I think there are some other things that he just can't tolerate.

Everytime I give him peanute butter (even a very very small amount) within 10 minutes it goes right through him.  Not diaherra, just very very soft.  Oh and Freeze Dried Apples.  He has not had any in about 2 weeks, I gave him some lastnight and this morning he woke with a diaper full.  That happened last time.

I guess they just don't agree with him.

So far he has been good today, we were gone all morning though.

Ate:

Wake:  Drank about 6 oz. milk
Breakfast:  Few bites of pear, 2 bites of toast
Snack:  Cheerioes, a few bites of hash brown

Way to go Kirsty and Jakob! Yes, they will sedate your child for an endoscopy and during it they will take some biopsies - the presence of EOS cells can show allegies (not intolerances).

Wendy, I'd hold off on the peanut butter - I don't recommend giving it until 2 ideally (18 months soonest) or 3 if any family history of nut allergies or asthma. Hope it goes well Monday - will be thinking of you guys.

Karen:  Yeah I agree, no more peanute butter espicailly if he is going to the bathroom so soon.

Well Lunch was not good:

Zach at 3 green beans, 1 bite of chicken and a few bites of his apple.  In between bites of his apple, he would scream and fuss for a few seconds a then fine (?).

I hope we get some answers Monday.

I will keep you all posted.

Hi

Yes Jakob did eat alot of food yesterday.Im thrilled he at least has some good days.

The pattern at the moment is he will eat well in the day if we get the food right.he is more into snack foods and not sandwiches or meals.I guess this has to be ok for now or he would eat nothing!! i have to let go of the idea he will eat his meat and veg at night. If dinner consists of crackers, banana and raisins....then i guess thats better than nothing right?

Teething and reflux play a big part on Jakobs good and not so good eating days.We will have to ride this out as it wont last forever ::)Here's hoping haha!!

Take care all
Kirsty

Ps I have started a thread in The Couch called "What CAN your toddler do"...............i started this to give us a place to share the great things our LOs can do.I found i spend alot of time worried what he isnt doing, isnt eating etc and thought it would be a good idea to have a positive thread for us to "brag" on!!! Please feel free to go and post about your LO......its a fun...positive thread to help focus on what our children are doing......put a smile on my face doing it anyway!!

Hello lovelies, I have a picky eater here too.  :)  I follow the Dr Sears way and try and aim for a balance over the week rather than a day, helps me not to get stressed!  However, I really need to expand my repertoire (not much of a cook) so it's great to be able to read some of the stuff you're doing - Steaming carrots in brown-sugar-water?  GENIUS!!!!

I just wanted to say I think your LOs are all doing really well and you're great mums for putting so much effort in!

Becca (just turned 2) only eats ham and cheese in cubes, tinned spaghetti (sometimes), crusts off bread, yoghurt with purreed fruit and sometimes a little cereal (Weetos). She hates all drinking cups although she's capable of drinking from them so sticks to the bottle. She drinks cows milk in the day, sweetened with a little sugar and formula for breakfast and at bedtime. It's hard to know how to increase her range of foods... I've tried to give her mash, and some fish, but she won't have it at any price :( I'm hoping that I can persuade her to eat mash eventually because then I'll be able to hide purreed veg into it.

Bexmummy:  Do you still give the formula because of the extra vitamins (to make sure she is getting enough)?

Zach has had an awful couple days:

So far today:

Wake:  7 oz. milk in cup
Breakfast:  1/2 biscuit and fruit puffs
Snack:  Handful of puffs, juice
Wake from Nap:  3 oz. milk
Lunch: Ummm did not want a thing, just crackers.  Ate 3 crackers and a strawberry fig newton
Snack:  A few bites of icecream

So fast that is it, he is asleep now for his 2nd nap and will drink some milk when he wakes.  Not sure how dinner will go, proably just crackers. :(  YOU CANNOT BE HEALTHY ON JUST CRACKERS.  I think I am going to take him to the Feedign Clinic once we get the results back from his Upper GI.

A tidbit from daycare: make a fist.  Allegedly, that's how much food a toddler needs each day.  Notice I said needs, not eats, as they would usually eat more.  Having said that, I have no idea if that's true or not, but it made a certain amount of sense at the time.  Add that to the theory of get the various food groups in over 2-3 days, and we can relax a bit.  So says the mama whose kid ate one saltine for lunch yesterday with her milk.  Tons of pizza/pasta choices at the buffet, she eats a cracker.       8)
When you're soaring through the air, I'll be your solid ground.  Take every chance you dare.  I'll still be there when you come back down.

I have heard that before about the toddlers and fist and food, Jenn. Sorry I've been MIA everyone - a bit crazy with the holidays and my girl who refused to nap at all on Sunday - but will post later and will respond to your PM as well, Wendy.

Sorry, i missed so much...notification wasn't working - why?

Karen, thanks for veggie bootie - Megan loves it!  Also willing to try just tomatoes - mixed fruit.  store i went to didn't have much in the way of veg.

Have you tried carrots w/ ranch dressing - this is how i got Megan to eat. I will try the brown sugar though.

Interesting most our LO have/had reflux.

HI Shelia - Megan has sensory issues too...didn't know common in refluxers.

She ate a corn dog recently!  Well at least the bread and a few bites of the turkey dog.  Maybe it was the food on stick...i will need to think how i can use this w/ new foods.
