How to stop engorged breast now I have stopped b/f?
« on: September 19, 2006, 12:26:03 pm »
I have stopped breastfeeding this week after nearly 7 mths.  I was only feeding twice a day for the last month anyway.  How do I stop my breast being engorged and quite painful (as they are at the moment!).  I keep thinking I should pump them a little, but I am then worried that this will increase the supply.

Any advice?!

If you really are in pain then it's probably best not to leave it.

How did you reduce from the 2 feeds? Have you been cutting back slowly?

It's true that pumping stimulates supply but I think it might be best to pump just a very small amount to relieve some discomfort. The amount you pump will then get gradually less and less until you can stop safely.

hi

I stopped over a period of two weeks.  I use to feed my LO first thing in the morning and then then again at bedtime.  I stopped the AM one first then the PM one.

One breast seems to be worst then the other, its sore to the touch.  I may try and pump it alittle to see if that helps

Sore to touch doesn't sound great! You poor thing. Just be super-safe and make sure you have read a bit about blocked ducts/ mastitis so you know what to look out for:

This is working for me:  I pumped 4x/day.  I picked one to start with & gradually reduced the minutes I pumped over the course of 4-5 days.  I'd give myself another 3-4 days & then pick the next pumping session to cut out.  HTH.  Sore boobs are no fun at all! :(

now i don't feel silly...i did exact same thing, but just dropping one feed pushed it from 12-24 hours apart...i know this post is a week old..hopefully you didn't mistake masis for painful engorgement like i did :-[
