Can I use formula if its JUST the odd occasion
« on: September 20, 2006, 17:53:19 pm »
I have a 5 day old and as with my last dd plan to pump and freeze just for when I am not around which would only be a special occasion eg meal out or something (not often)

Thing is I HATE EXPRESSING!!!! Its just so uncomfortable to me that I dread it and would rather not!!!

Does it make any difference to formula feed these very odd occasions?

It would not affect your supply if it was truly the occasional odd feed, if that's what you're asking.  So don't worry if that's all you're wondering about.

If you're asking about the potential impact of the occasional bottle of formula on your little one, check out the thread on the FAQ board entitled: "For those who have the choice - why exclusive breastfeeding is recommended".

Congratulations on your new LO.

It's important to remember that not everyone has the luxury of being able to make this choice but if you can I'm afraid the evidence suggests it is worth holding off on formula. I would agree with Petunia and also suggest you read the FAQ thread but feel free to contact me if you would like further information.

If expressing is uncomfortable for you then there are a couple of things to think about e.g. should you be using a larger flange size (flange - great word)?, is your nipple placed centrally?
You may also prefer to master the art of hand expression.

I know it's a bloody hassle but if you can keep with exclusive breastfeeding as long as you can bear it there will be benefits.

P.S. Some lactation consultants would say hold off on using bottle for a little longer if you can. Not so much for the supply issue but just to make sure her latch is completely solid.

I have been using formula on the odd occasion since DS was three weeks old. Now, when I say odd, I mean ODD. Some weeks once or twice, sometimes not for two or three weeks. My breasts just don't respond well to pumping, I have to work for a half hour to get two ounces, and I get nothing if I try after DS has just been fed (I know it's not a supply thing, as he is HUGE)

I would hold off until your sin is three to four weeks old, but then try him with a bottle of half formula, half breast milk. That's how I got DS started.

I would love to EBF, but my boobs just don't work that way!

I have to say that I agree with emma.  If you ARE able to express, than that is the way to go.  I know it's a pain in the behind (I pump 5 days a week), and I almost quit. - but if I can say or do anything, I would just encourage you to stay exclusive with breast milk- if it is possible for you. There are just so many benefits for your lo.  I would check out the before mentioned thread. It is very informative.

Also, the more you pump the less it hurts- unless there is something else wrong, like thrush or an infection...ouch!

and you could try a lower suction.  I had to use the breast petals and a low suction when I first did it to make it comfortable enough.  Now- no petal and highest suction possible!
