help with dropping night feed/ wakening
« on: September 22, 2006, 09:48:22 am »
I am not sure if this is the right place for this question. Maybe feeding solid food or bottle feeding would be a better place for it, feel free to move it if i have posted in the wrong place.

For a while now my 6 1/2 mo DD has been waking for a bottle during the night. She used to wake once and take 4 - 6 oz but she is now waking up to three times, taking 8 oz and sonetimes looking for more.  She takes 4 8oz bottles everyday and is on 3 solid meals. I don't know what to do with her.

She is teething and has been wakened with poopy nappies during the night for the past 3 nights, I am worried she is getting into the habit of wakening and will never sleep through again. She can sleep through and does it around once a week, so i know she can do it.

Last night she woke 3 times, was up for an hour between 2am and 3am, I am so tired I can't do this anymore. She took 8oz during the night last night, i think she is unable to go back to sleep without a bottle now.  She doesn't feed to sleep and can put herself to sleep independently at all other times.

I need help, how can I help my baby sleep with no night feed?

Our usual routine is

Awake 6.30 - 7
E - 7am  8oz bottle
A
Solids - 8.30 - 9am
S - 9am for up to 1 1/2 hours
E - 11am 8oz  bottle
solids - 12pm
A
S - she usually has a 45min -1 hour naps in the afternoon
A -
E - 3pm 8 oz bottle
A
S - 4.15 - 4.30 45 min catnap
solids - 5/ 5.15pm
A- 6pm bath
E - 6.30pm 8 or 9oz bottle
S- 7pm
TIA

Hey have had a look around for you as I said...

Found what I did with Harrison at 6months this is it...

7am awake 210ml
8am cereal
8.30-10am sleep

11am 210ml
12noon lunch
12.30-2pm sleep

3pm210ml
4pm 1/2hr sleep
5.30pm 210ml
7.30pm 210ml and too bed...

We never had tea in here either, but was thinking maybe if you tried to bring breaky forward to 8am might be able to get Kristen down for a sleep earlier...

here is another routine find you might like..

7am awake and bottle
8am breaky
9am sleep for 1.5-2hrs

11am bottle
12noon solids
1.00 nap1/1.5hrs

3.00 bottle

4.30/5.00 45 min

6.00 tea
7.00 bottle and to bed...

Maybe you could also try to add a dream feed in at around 10pm to try and tie her over?
Not sure if this is any help to you??

Andrea...

maisy, just to be clear, does she have an 8oz bottle EACH time she wakes at night, or just once? I would assume once but I just want to be sure.

It definitely sounds like she's teething, have you treated that at all? I also suspect a growth spurt, do you think that's possible?

Thanks Jessica,  no she takes 8oz over the course of the night, she took two lots of four oz then woke with a dirty nappy and satyed awake for an hour i managed to resettle her with a video (friends her version of white noise ::)) and she fell back asleep, she would have taken more but i drew the line at 8oz, she was obviously not hungry as she then slept from 3.30  - 7am

She is definitely teething and her first tooth popped through last sunday and i think she is working on a couple more.

Could be a growth spurt,  It is worrying me as I was about to ask about dropping the night feed anyway and she suddenly seems to need it more than ever

LOL!!! That's hilarious, I LOVE it!!!  ;D  ;D  ;D  8)

I would continue with the night feed then for a few more days and then see how things are. If it continues, then I would consider weaning.

Well, if it goes on for a while it COULD become a habit, but either way you'll need to wean it so I guess it doesn't make too much of a difference, KWIM?

There's a fabulous sticky in the FAQ section of this forum called How I Ended the Night Feeds with a 9 mo. Old. When you're ready to wean, give that a look. There's some really great information and the technique has worked like a charm for an awful lot of people. If you have questions or problems then give us a post!

may be worth a try once u have sorted out the teething ???

Hey guys, thanks for all the info, just wanted to post a quick update.

Afetr readingyour posts and feeing glad that I wasn't getting her into a terrible habit, i also spoke with my mum. She spent a whole day with us and suggested that Kirsten was maybe not getting enough to eat at her solid feeds. So I upped  what she was eating a little at each solid meal. I also gave her a spoon of calpol before bed on thursday night.

Between the two, I think things are improving. Last night she woke up once and only took 2 oz, which is a big improvement, she is also still taking all her daytime feeds so the poor soul must have just been hungry.
I will let her get past the teething for a few days and then I think I will tackle dropping the night wakings all together, i think i will go with the watering down feeds, seems like a good way to go!

Thanks again and no doubt I will be back!!
