eating problems 13 months
« on: September 27, 2006, 19:00:28 pm »
Hello all, my DD of 13.5 months has been a  VERY good eater since she started at 5.5 months- self feeding from the start, drinking from a cup (water) trying everything more than once! Now she just doesn't want to eat the same things - even refusing 9 times out of 10 her old favorite banana!  She sits in a high chair that uses the table instead of a tray. She's started squirming and trying to get out and even starting to cry before she's finished and still hungry. If i take her out and hold her on my lap she'll sometimed eat something that I give her or she'll continue to squirm to get down. Then she'll eat something while she's sitting on the floor. I don't want to get into the situation often seen of kids running around while they eat. What's going on? Should I maybe get her a booster seat?

Hi sienna,

I remember my DD doing this around the same age as well ::) 12-15mths is afunny age, its where they start to want to become super independant and make their own choices....frustrating i know! but the good news is they do grow out of it ;)

with Dd i just kept offering her differant foods and if she didn't want them no big deal! IMO if they are hungry then they will eat.. ;) eventually she started eating everything again.  We also brought her a toddler table and chair which we put next to our table and found that she loved it and would want to sit down to eat with us...you could try this or as you suggested a booster seat that you can add onto the dining table.

 HTH  :) :)

Keep in mind that there's a big decrease in appetite that happens around 1 yr, so sometimes, she may just not be hungry. If it's important to you that she eat at the table (it's one of our house rules), you might try a booster or something else. Choices might help too. Even if she isn't verbal, you can hold up 2 things and she can point to the one she wants. In the meantime, make sure you're sending her the message that eating happens at the table only. If she cries or fusses, end the meal without making it a big deal and let her go on her way. Don't try to pull out all the stops just to get food into her...healthy kids don't starve themselves, and she'll eat when she's hungry!

Hi Sienna

My DS is 15 months and in a booster seat but has been doing much the same thing now for a couple of months.  Eating is turning into a bit of a farse but I'm trying to compromise with him (if that's possible).
Feeding with a spoon/fork is equivalent to brushing his teeth ..... HE has to do it - noone else.  But after 2 mouthfuls he'd rather play with the cat or get down and play.  Last night I tried to give him a whole meal of finger food and he had a fair bit but then discovered I'd put some ketchup on his plate so just ate that only!!

I do tend to let him down and allow him desert on the floor but that is only ever fruit and I make him sit down on the floor to eat it.

Like TylersMommy says, his appetite has certainly dropped lately, he eats well during the day but not much at dinnertime. he's not losing weight though and is certainly not lacking energy !! so I'm not worried.

Don't know what is right or wrong, I'm just trying to go with the flow and not make a big deal of it because he is really picking up on these things at the moment ...but that's another story  ::)

Oh yes Rachel does the same now and she has also decided that her old fave banana is the worst thing she's ever had in her life.  I just try to keep her meals short and chatty and then when she gets fussy I let her out. but then I am strict and she's not allowed anything else until the next snack/meal time and she always eats really well then.  I think it's just their little personalities developing.
