Has my baby forgotten how to eat?
« on: September 30, 2006, 22:33:22 pm »
Okay, I know that's not really the case, but my 4 week old has been refusing to nurse and/or take her bottle for more than 5 minutes at a time the past two days.  Anyone have any suggestions as to what may be happening?  She'll latch on, but then pop back off and then she acts like she is frantic - mouth wide open and moving her head from side to side, but when I get her latched on, she pops right back off with a disgusted look on her face.  When I try the bottle (she's taken one for the past two weeks with no problem) she just kind of chews on it and then spits the milk back out.  E.A.S.Y. is definitely not working at this point because she won't eat, so she doesn't sleep for more than 30 minutes.  HELP!!!!

Oh dear. I am really not very good at these things but I will give it a try. Ok my thought is it might be painful for her to suck. Have you looked into her mouth to see if she has any white spots (indicating a possible thrush/yeast overgrowth) or any red or inflammed spots?

Sounds like the sleeping and eating issue is related. She likely can't sleep with a hungry tummy or sore mouth.

Those are just my thoughts. I am really not the best person to ask. I hope you get some more help. Please let me know how it goes

Are you engorged?  If your breasts get too engorged and hard it may be tough for baby to latch on.  You could try pumping just a little bit right before the feeding to get the milk going so that she will be immediately gratified.

I also agree with pp--if it were engorgement she would probably take the bottle.

Wish I could be more help!
