Hiccups or schedule waking 2 month old??
« on: October 05, 2006, 23:30:58 pm »
Hi,

My LO is 2 months and has been on EASY since birth.  He began sleeping from 10 pm - 6 am a couple weeks ago.  Three and four nights ago, he woke up fussing at 3:45 am for no apparent reason and went back to sleep after about 20 minutes of sh/pat.  For the last two nights he has woken up with bad hiccups around 4:00 am.  The hiccups have lasted at least an hour in which he fusses and/or is WIDE AWAKE and wants to talk.  I am back and forth to his bedroom to calm him and give him his pacifier back until I finally give up and get him up for his first feed at 5:30 (a half hour early).  Not sure if the waking over the last four nights is related to his schedule or if the first two nights were unrelated to the last two (hiccup) nights.

So, my two questions are:

I asked the pediatrician for advice to prevent hiccups and he had nothing to tell me except that it should stop around 3 months!!  Do I really have to do this every night for another month??  Does anyone know of ways to prevent hiccups or to stop them once they start?

AND

Is he wide awake because of the hiccups or am I doing something wrong with his schedule?  Is he getting too much sleep from 6:30 pm on?  He does not appear to be hungry when he wakes up in the middle of the night.  He is on a 3 1/2 hour feeding schedule and I combine breast and bottle (with breast milk and formula) feeding.  His schedule is as follows:

E - 6:00 am (breast fed)
A - diaper change, talk for a bit if wide awake
S - 7:00 am (back in crib, sometimes doesn't sleep until 7:30)

E - 9:30 am (breast fed followed by up to 2 oz formula)
A -
S - 11:00 am

E - 1:00 pm (breast fed followed by up to 2 oz formula)
A -
S - 2:30 pm

E - 4:30 pm (6 oz formula)
A - bath
S - 6:30 pm

E - 8:00 (6 oz formula)
A - diaper change
S - 8:30 pm

E - 10:00/10:30 dreamfeed (5 oz formula)

Thank you in advance for any advice - I appreciate it!!

We always used Gripe Water to stop hiccups...worked for both of our kids.  Make sure to get the alcohol-free type.

Thank you - I went to Target immediately after reading your response and they did not have any gripe water.  I ended up elevating my DS's mattress and started using mylecon at nighttime feedings and it is working great!!
