shushing...is it a prop?
« on: October 06, 2006, 12:30:51 pm »
Hi,
I can't get my baby to nap during the day without shushing for 5 to 10 minutes every time. Have I created a prop?
Shes 14 weeks old and takes 3 naps a day. I bring her to her room, swaddle her (she usually starts to fuss at this point as she knows its nap time), then I sit for a few minutes, then start to shush for a couple of mins and put her into her cot  - I usually have to shush for another 5 mins before she'll drop off, I stop as soon as shes asleep.
Am I always going to have to do this? will she ever learn to sleep at nap time without the shushing?

Thanks for any opinions,
L

Hi L, I too struggle with the concept and wonder if, but i've been told that it should decrease over time, just not seeing it yet.  Have you tried just laying her and seeing if she'll settle on her own?  I think you only intervene if she really cries-not the fussy or mantra cry--someone correct me if i've misunderstood  Hilary  jacksmomns

Thanks for your replies.
Stacy in your link you say " Its easily removed when done correctly, doesnt become a prop/dependancy." This is the bit I'm struggling with. I can't seem to be able to remove it as she won't settle in the day time without the shushing...

Yes, i'm curious to know how long this process should usually take-approximately-before they don't need it removing it seems impossible   Hilary
