screaming in the night
« on: October 06, 2006, 15:39:43 pm »
I have a 10 month old boy who is going through something and I don't know how to help him.  He has recently turned a corner and will fall asleep on his own for two 1 to 1.5 hour naps a day.  When he wakes he is bubbly and chatty until I go up to get him.  The problem is the night waking - he goes to sleep well then occasionally will wake up 1.5 - 2 hours later screaming.  Usually we'll quietly pop into his room and give him his soother and he'll go back to sleep, but then he'll do it again at 2 or 3 in the morning.

At other times in the night (once in an while, not every night) he'll wake up and coo and roll over and go back to sleep and I won't even go in to his room.  But with these screaming wakes he stands right up in the crib and won't get himself back to sleep.  Eventually I go in and lay him down and give him his soother and he moans for a while then goes back to sleep.

Any thoughts?

He's 10 months old - 22 pounds
great napper
big eater
just starting to walk (with support of walls etc)
seems to be teething off and on -but no new teeth seen yet

Congrats on naps!  As for nights, I would think with pulling up, trying to walk, and teething are causing the nightwakings.  It is totally normal for these devolopmental milestones to interrupt nighttime sleep.  It should pass with some time.  Good luck!

Nightwaking may also be a sign of tiredness. What does his usual day look like (routine)?
