What have you tried to help baby sleep later?
« on: October 07, 2006, 10:54:06 am »
I'm suffering the early baby problem as well.  DS has been trying to wake at 5ish.  I'd like to know what has worked for all of you.  Here's our schedule.

He's 10 months
wake  anywhere from 5-6 (usually closer to 5)
6:30 or 7 breakfast with breastmilk

9ish nap (usually ~1.5 hrs)

11 lunch

1 nap (he has always needed this nap within 2 hrs or so after waking from his morning nap.  I've tried stretching until 2 with little success. and as of late he only sleeps for an hour or so) so he's up from 2 until bedtime!

3 snack

6:30 dinner, bath,
7 pm bed

Thanks
Cherie

Unfortunately, I'm in your same boat so don't have much advice---but would take some!  I am getting so exhausted from these early morning wakings and am just trying to figure out if that's his time or if there's something I can do about it.  My ds is 7 months old and has really just settled into his routine in the past two weeks.  But this seems to involve a 6am (or sometimes earlier) wake time.  I've always been a little nervous because when he would eat through the night it would still only be a 12 hour night total.   I was afraid when he started sleeping through he would get up earlier.  I know I should be thankful because he goes to bed 7pm or sometimes 6:45.  But I just can't seem to get used to this!  Plus he wakes crying most of the time so I'm not sure how long to let it go.  Along with this, I have an almost 2 year old so once the day starts it continues straight through until about 1 when I'm able to get about an hour "me" time.  I think another difficult part of the adjustment for me has been that ds1 is a great sleeper!  I remember when he was 7 months I was stressed because he would sleep until 8 or sometimes after (after going to bed at 6:30pm!) and I couldn't decide if I should let him or get him up!  So I just imagine how great it would be to get ds2 to even sleep until 7, maybe even 6:30.

Our routine is about the same as yours.  Does your LO get tired between the last nap and bedtime?  Mine seems to but won't go down for a nap.  Then if it gets to be 6, I think it's too late to nap him.  I've considered giving him a short nap then and keeping him up a little later in hopes of an earlier wake.  My past experience has been that he wakes up about the same time anyway.  But it used to be 6:30---and I thought that was bad!  Anyway, wondering if he's going to be overtired and that's a problem?  Also, I know for ds1 it really worked to put him to bed earlier, but I'm so afraid to do that!  One night I tried and he woke up at 5 the next morning!  Maybe it takes more than one night?  Or maybe I should try a third nap and later bedtime?  Have you tried any of these things?

Here's our day:

6ish (or before) wake
6:30 eat
8:15/30---1.5 hour nap
11--eat
12:30---1.5-2 hour nap  (wakes around 2:15/30
3:30  bottle
5---food dinner
6:30 bottle
bed around 7

I'm glad someone can relate to this, although feel bad for you too!  I had these dreams of my kids sharing a room but ds1 sleeps so late even now----until 7:40----I hate to take that from him!  And I was a little discouraged to see there is a whole topic posting for people with this issue!  Guess I was hoping there was a solution...

Yes, our routines do look very similar.  He does get cranky around the dinner hour and since he dropped his late afternoon catnap, he won't go back to it.  He can go from 2 until bedtime better than from 11 to 1.  I guess maybe I should try to stretch the afternoon nap until 2, but another problem is that on Mon and Wed I have to pick up my older son from school at 2:45, so we're in a bit of a pickle when it comes to our naps.  Glad to know we're not the only ones.
