I started offering a spoon to hold almost as soon as we started solids, just to give Lilah something to hold onto, so she wouldn't grab the spoon I was using! As she got older (probably at about a year), I would start filling it for her. By 14 months she refused to let me spoon-feed her anymore, so that was that. She can use a spoon well, but even at 2 years old, she doesn't always choose to... (just gotta love the yogurt-is-a-finger-food two-year-old idea
). I think the average age for kids to start wanting to self-feed with a spoon is about 18 months, so sometime between now and then, start offering one, filling it for her at first. Some kids never really take the initiative and need more encouragement, and some (like my DD) won't let anyone spoon-feed them from an early age, even though they aren't very proficient at it yet.
