What age did you introduce a spoon?
« on: October 10, 2006, 01:30:08 am »
Hi all

DD will be one this week :) :'(  She is a great self-feeder with her fingers, but was wondering on when I should start introducing a spoon to her.   When did you offer your lo's a spoon and how long did it take them to get the hang of it?  I have given the spoon to her a couple of times, and she just throws it on the floor as she thinks it is a toy at the moment :P

TIA!

I started offering a spoon to hold almost as soon as we started solids, just to give Lilah something to hold onto, so she wouldn't grab the spoon I was using!  As she got older (probably at about a year), I would start filling it for her.  By 14 months she refused to let me spoon-feed her anymore, so that was that.  She can use a spoon well, but even at 2 years old, she doesn't always choose to... (just gotta love the yogurt-is-a-finger-food two-year-old idea  ::) ).  I think the average age for kids to start wanting to self-feed with a spoon is about 18 months, so sometime between now and then, start offering one, filling it for her at first.  Some kids never really take the initiative and need more encouragement, and some (like my DD) won't let anyone spoon-feed them from an early age, even though they aren't very proficient at it yet.

Rachel started demanding she had the spoon at 13 months and some days she wants it and somedays she doesn't and we go with the flow.

I gave Toby a spoon as soon as we started solids - round about 6 months - not that he was able to use it properly, but it occasionally found it's way into his mouth!
I think if you eat together it can help show the little ones what the utensils are for.
Here in the UK we have a product in the baby shops which are a spoon and fork which attach to the high chair tray, or dining table by suction, and have a curly flex, so that they can't be thrown on the floor. I've never used them, but have friends who swear by them - would you have anything similar to save your back from all that bending down?
