~*^*~how does LO transition from formula to cow's milk~*^*~
« on: October 12, 2006, 18:21:57 pm »
Hi ladies.  DD turns 1 on 12/9 and after buying yet another can of formula the other day, I got to thinking about what I need to do when she's able to drink milk.  I'm sure I can't just start giving her milk the day after her birthday....so do I need to transition her slowly?  Any information I can get would be GREATLY helpful.  Thanks!!!

Hi tricia,

I went cold turkey with DD and went straight onto cows milk shortly after her 1 st bday luckily she took to it really well.  She was a bit unsure for the 1st couple of days but then drank fine afterwards.  Some of my friends have mixed formula with cows milk i.e say 6oz formula 2 of cows milk and gradually increasing the amount of cows milk until theres no formula left in the mixture that also works well if your dd refuses it at first.

You could give it a try and see what she does she might surprise you and take to it straightaway!

HTH :) :)

Hi,

What I did with my DS, who turned 1 at the weekend, was gradually introduce cows milk into his bottles.  He had already been having cows milk sometimes in his cereal, and in cooking so I was pretty sure he would be okay with it anyway.  I started a few weeks before his birthday, only because I didn't want to buy another tin of formula, and so that by the time he turned one, he would be off the formula completely.   Anyway, what I did with his bottles was, instead of making up the usual 8oz of formula, I would make up 6oz and then top the bottle up with cows milk.  After a week of this I would do half and half, so make up 4oz bottles and top up to 8oz, then after another week I would make up 2oz bottles and add 6oz of cows milk.

I did this with my first ds with no problem whatsover.  With my second ds he started to be sick around the time I started so I was worried that mixing the two types of milk together might have been the problem, but it turns out he was cutting some back teeth at the time, and teething usually makes him a bit sick.  After a few days he was okay and is now on only cows milk.

I did post about it at the time, and someone did say that their doctor didn't recommend mixing the two, however, on speaking to my health visitor, she said it wouldn't cause any problems.  If you wanted to go down this route, but weren't sure then probably best if you speak to your own dr or health visitor.

Anyway, good luck!

Jo

We did the gradual mixing.  Good thing as she turned out to be somewhat lactose intolerant.  Her formula had contained 1/4 the amount of lactose and she was fine.  Add milk,  :P .  Soo, lactose free milk.

We went straight onto Cows milk, just switched straight over.

However we have since found that he may have an intolerance to Cows Milk so have put him back on formula, until we know if it is the milk that is the problem.

Thanks ladies....I think we'll go with a slow transition, just to be on the safe side.  Thanks for your help!

We went cold turkey at about 10MO - but did one feed at a time.  DD loved it and her intake went up!  I did warm it and serve it in a bottle and now we've switched to sippy cups and straw cups for the most part.  We did watch her carefully for tummy issues, but didn't have a one.  Why 10MO?  I was down to about 3 cans of formula and didn't want to drop any more money on it, so I figured this was a better way to go!
