microwave sterilisation - curious
« on: October 14, 2006, 20:13:28 pm »
Hi I'm a UK mum and regularly use microwave sterilisation for my bottles (as do any other mum bottle feeding that I know over here).  I was recently in Canada and I noticed that on the formula tin they had a warning against microwave sterilisation.  I was just curious if anyone else had noticed this and why they issued the warning?  I'm not going to change what we're doing but my mum and I were really puzzled.

Thanks

Interesting...

I know here in the UK we have warnings agains warming a bottle of milk in the microwave due to hot spots forming in the milk.. but Ive not seen a warning against microwave sterilisation. I often use a microwave steriliser at my moms so will be interested in this..

Could it be down to the chemicals in the plastic of the bottles reacting to the microwaves...?? I use B-free bottles as they have less chemicals in the plastic of the bottle reducing the risk of them geting into the babies milk..

I too have never heard of this, but find it very interesting as we have always used the microwave steraliser.

Hello

I just noticed this post so I thought that I would reply.
I live in Canada and sterilize and heat my bottles in the microwave. I bought a microwave sterilizer from avent here in Canada so it is legal. LOL
I noticed this warning when I brought dd home from the hospital and as a paranoid first time mom I actually called the formula company (Nestle) and asked them to explain this in further detail. They couldn't give me a clear concise answer as to why I shouldn't sterilize the bottles in the microwave. She just warned me against all microwave use for sterilizing and heating of bottle for infants and the microwave can cause uneven heating of the formula in the bottle. There must have been a lawsuit of some sort.
Anyways, I continued to sterilize using the microwave.

AAAHHH - It was on a can of Good Start that I saw the warning so maybe that's why.  ;D

Thank you for solving that mystery!!
