6+ mth EASY - how much is a snack?
« on: October 14, 2006, 22:14:53 pm »
Hi,

Our DS has been on EASY since he was 4.5 months old. Since then we've had a few ups and downs through teething and travel, but overall in hindsight, things have been going well (we've mostly overreacted that EASY wasn't working anymore when it's been disruptions to his routine that have been problematic).

He is now 6.5 months and we are noticing that the 4 hour EASY is too short and are trying to transition to a 4.5 hour EASY. Here's what we have planned:

E   7:00:00 AM  (formula + oat/rice cereal)
A   7:45:00 AM
S   9:30:00 AM
E   11:30:00 PM (formula + veggies)
A   12:00:00 AM
S   2:00:00 PM
E   3:30 PM - 4:00:00 PM  (snack)
A   4:15:00 PM
E   6:30:00 PM - 7:00 PM (formula + veggies + oat/rice cereal)

My question is what constitutes a snack and how much to give? Do you give solids or liquids at the snack? Based on the above, I would think that it would be liquids and considering the proxmity to the supper time, I would assume not more than 4 oz. His total during the day of liquids avergaes between 24 and 28 oz of formula. Now assuming he has 7 to 8 oz at the morning, lunch and dinner feeds for 21 to 24 oz, 4 oz at the snack seems reasonable.

Sorry for such a long post, but this seem to make sense?

Thanks in advance for your support!

Hi there,

It is totally up to you.  If you have introduced dairy into your lo's diet, you may want to try offering your lo a baby yogurt - this also counts towards the oz of dairy - or if you like you can offer a small bottle of about 4-5 oz as a snack - It is completely up to you.

At 6 months my DS was on 3 bottles a day as he was refusing his late afternoon one, and we introudced a small snack in it's place.

Snacks here were yogert, cheese, bread, crackers, and a lot more. It really depends what you LO is eating and how you feel about where your LO eats. For example we had days where mushed fruit was the snack and DD ate in her chair, but on her active days we let her snack on dry foods while she played. We still do that. At 6.5 months I would stick more with purees and yogerts, but as he gets older you can change the snacks to fit.
