Short awake time
« on: October 15, 2006, 00:08:49 am »
I was wondering if anyone else's lo has short awake times during the day.  My dd is almost 5 months (in one week).  In the morning she is up 1.5 hours before she needs a nap, and the rest of the day it is usually 1.5-1.75 hours before she needs a nap.  She usually naps three times.  I see posts where people have thier 4 month old up for 2.5-3 hours and I am amazed.  I remember my son being somewhat like this too, so I geuss maybe I just have big sleepers.  We have not yet switched to 4 hour EASY, because I think they need to stay up 2 hours before you can do it. (Am I wrong?)  Our only problem with short awake times is the days when her naps are on the short side, we end up with too much awake time before bed.  And for some reason, when this happens I cannot get her to take a forth nap even though she is tired.  Anyone else have short awake times?  Anyone else not switched to 4 hour EASY? (BTW, I don't think we went to 4 hour EASY until 6 months with my ds.)

Hi Nicole,

My DS was the same - he battled to stay awake for long periods of time.  Especially in the morning, his 1st nap was always 1.5 hours after he woke up.

With you saying that sometimes your lo is battling short naps, I definitely think that it is time to transition closer to the 4 Hour EASY.  Have you tried slowing moving to the 3.5 Hour, or even doing 3 1/4 hour to help you get closer to moving to the 4 hour.

Hope this info helps.

Hi Nicole,
I think my baby is a big sleeper too. She is a little over 3 months and can not stay awake longer than 1 hour without getting all fussy and tired. I don't allow her to get that way because it makes for a long day for both of us. Also, she does not seem to be eating as much every 3 hours so I have started extending the time she eats to 3 1/2, unless she seems really hungry. I see her being like your little one at 5 months. I am also concerned about the afternoon time where it seems there is like a two hour interval before bed that I don't know what to do w/. I was going to try and get her to take a short nap.

She is not sleeping entirely through the night, but goes to bed at 7:00pm and then eats at 3:00am and then wakes around 6:45-7am.  She has been doing this for a while so I'm thinking as long as she is sleeping good at night, then she really needs the sleep time in the day.

I'm glad that I saw your post because I am constantly reading other things about babies her age being up for longer periods of time.

Hi Nicole,

I wanted to let you know that my ds also was a big napper! We were actually on 4 hour EASY but with a longer A and S time, the A time always being shorter that what the "textbooks" say.  Is her nighttime sleep interrupted at all? If not, then count your blessinga you have a great napper and have lots of Y time for ds.
