Table Foods?
« on: November 02, 2006, 20:18:46 pm »
When did you guys start giving table foods? Hayden about had a meltdown last night watching me eat dinner. He really wants to eat what we're eating so much that I'm almost at the point of putting some of it on his tray. Tonight we're having spaghetti & I was gonna try cutting some up & letting him try his luck with it. He stalks you with his eyes whenever you're eating something, it's almost weird.

Can anyone help? TIA.

We started with table foods at around 7 months, we would just mash it up and let DS have a try.  It took him a while to get used to it, but now loves to eat all our foods.

We waited until 10months to start table food and by 12months she was on it all the time. The reason you should wait is that babies can't handle salt and other things we often cook with. I would hold out on Spag Bol at this age as tomatoes are very acidy and can cause upset tummies.

Our pediatrician just gave the OK to start table foods.  DS is almost 10 months old.  I agree with the PP, LO can't handle the salt, sugar, grease, etc at an early age.  IMO, I would hold off on the table foods.
But then again, I have a couple of friends who have started table foods at 7 months (why I don't know) and now they are having trouble getting their LO's to drink their formula and eating other things besides french fries and chicken nuggets.

Oh, I was just going to give him the pasta part, not the sauce lol, what a mess that would be  ;D & we eat really healthy so anything I cook doesn't have anything bad in it, I never use butter unless I have to, but in general, we don't eat stuff like that.  I was thinking more along the lines if we have chicken one night I'll prechew some of mine up & put it on his plate.  Or if I'm having a sandwhich I'll chew up some bread & give him some.  Sorry for the confusion  :)

My daughter started table foods at about 7 months -  We have had a real hard time getting her to drink her formula since about 2 months old -  She just hates any formula.  with the help of our ped we started finger foods at 6 months becasue she would spoon feed anymore at 6 months old!!!!  Independent litte girl -  anyway I would give her fruit and veggies in small pieces which she did fine with and then by 7-8 months she was doing cherrios and other cereal  and pretty much by 8 months was eating all our table food.   We do eat really healthy also and she has had no problems with it.   I do find it funny that it is easier to get her to drink her formula now than it was at 2-5 months!!!   She eats 3 meals a day plus a snack and then 3 bottles still!!!     Every child is different and with the help of your ped and ques from your child you should be able to figure out what works best for you.

Jenny Jen,

When we started our DS on table foods, we always cooked his food seperatley so that it would not contain any salt, grease etc in it.  To be honest, he mostly only wanted to eat the vegetables which was great as they were so easy to mas up for him.

We always give our DD the same as us at dinner time. She is 10 months old. We just just don't cook with salt or sugar. We pretty much use olive oil for all our cooking and we eat fish but not meat.

The only time she has something different is if we're having spicy food, but I plan on gradually introducing her to mild chillis and spices soon. She's had mild curried food and loves it. She loves EVERYTHING though! lol

It's a great opportunity to review your own diet and start eating healthier ;)  I make a point of never eating anything infront of DD that I wouldn't allow her to have (e.g. chocolate, fizzy drinks etc). i just don't think it's fair to say no to something cause it's deemed 'bad' for them but I'm eating it!! That's not to say I won't indulge when she's tucked up in bed!!  ;D

If the food you cook is healthy, why not let him join in if he's eager? Some children bypass purees altogether, and there's nothing wrong with that. I think the more natural and family-like the setting, the better it is for the child. Food is not all about nutrition, it's a social experience as well. I say go for it!
