5.5 months--Should Idrop the DF?
« on: November 06, 2006, 23:55:30 pm »

DD is 5.5 months. She is FF has been on solids for one month, mostly cereal just started veg. and fruit. She eats 3tbsp cereal and 1-2tbsp veg at 6pm, bottle at 7pm and DF at 10ish. She wakes 6:30-7am and only takes 3-4oz of her usual 7 and same at 11am feed. She gets hungrier as the day progresses and finishes all her bottles. She is on 4hr easy. She takes the DF well and never wakes for a feed. She just doesn't want to eat in the am. I can only get her to take solids in the eve as well. I have tried to give solids before her bottle, 1 hr after at 7 am & 11am, she just can't do it. Occasionally she will take it at 11am before her bottle. Ped. wants solids first as she was consistently taking 35-40oz. She is 18lbs--- 86th percentile, and 73rd for height.

Do you think this is a phase, or due to solids? It seemed to start after her 4month shots a few weeks ago and then she had a cold, but she has been well for a while now.

Any Suggestions? She is a good napper and sleeps well most nights. I am scared to drop the DF, but will wean it if she just doesn't need it.

Thank you,
Natalie

I read in Tracey's book that you should wean from DF at 7 or 8 months or when solids are well established and it sounds like it is, so I would wean.  Do it gradually taking an ounce away and bringing the DF up one hour per night until you arrive at your 7 pm feed.  (I think it's how you do it)  anyone els agree?

Well, I do not have the answer to your question.  I can tell you that I went through a similar situation.  My son actually had been eating poorly since he turn 3 months old and since it had gotten increasingly worse.  At some point in time, he was drinking like 3-4 oz for his meals, instead of his 7 oz.  There were days that he was only drinking 24 oz - this when he was 5 months old.  I had started solids also at 4 months, and even on the times that I witheld solids, he still would drink little.  At some point in time, he was only taking 2 - 3 oz for his dreamfeed.  I thought to eliminate it, but for a while I did not because I was using the dreamfeed to get him to intake more for the day since he was eating so poorly in the daytime.

Eventually, I saw no purpose in keeping the dreamfeed and I decided to eliminate it.  When I did, he only lasted two days without the dreamfeed, because then he started to wake up at 2AM hungry.  That is when I started back on the dreamfeed and I have not stopped it yet.  Now he eats much better and is finishing all his bottles and all his solids and even drinks 7 oz of milk for his dreamfeed.

This does not answer your question, but at least you know that you are not alone.  I guess if you decide to eliminate the dreamfeed, you can try it out.  If it does not work out, you can always go back to dreamfeeding her.

Thank you Nee and Ariel. I am hoping it is just a phase and she will go back to eating well. Ariel what happened to you is what I am afraid will happen if I drop the DF. I am giving her 6oz instead of 7oz at DF. She is hungry in the eve and not in the am. At 6pm yest she was starving and actually wimpering because she was hungry---she never acts hungry in the am.

I think I will keep it for now and just see how she does.

Natalie,

Do you think your lo could be teething?  Teething can affect their appetite and the sucking motion on the bottle can really hurt their gums.

It could be that towards the end of the day she is really hungry from not having much during the day.

Just a thought ....
