another worn out mother of an early-waker story!
« on: November 07, 2006, 01:24:40 am »
I know there are early waker stories out there, so I guess this is normal and okay.  I think I'm tired of trying to get my lo to sleep longer (maybe he needs more food?  Maybe not enough A time, etc.)  I just kept trying things and do I need to just realize this is how he will be?

Here is a generally typical day (by the way, he's just turned 8 mos)

Wakes anywhere between 5:45-6:15.  He will happily play for about 15-20 minutes.

6:30/45 bottle---8 oz.
7:30-45---cereal and fruit  (maybe about 1-2 oz. total)
Three hours after wake-up---usually around 9----1.5 hour nap
11---8 oz. bottle
12---cereal and fruit (same amt as b'fast)
Three hours after wake-up---usually around 1:30---1.5-2 hour nap
3/3:30---8 oz. bottle
5---veggies for dinner with us (abt. 2-3 oz.)
6:30/7---8 oz. bottle
7ish---bedtime

I've tried earlier bedtime/later bedtime and he still wakes so early!  And, I thought he may be like this from the beginning as his whole night would be 12 hours including 1-2 breastfeeds.  I do not attend to him in the morning as long as he is happy and, must admit, sometimes even when he starts crying if it's too early.  But I also assume since he's waking happy for a while he's rested and is also able to stay awake for three hours happily afterward.  He also cries at the beginning of most naps---less than 5 min.  Is this just mantra?

Anyway, guess just wanted some reassurance this is okay and he's probably just this way.  I keep thinking that it is only temporary and probably in the next year he'll be content in there longer in the mornings.  It is just difficult because ds1 (just turned 2) sleeps until about 7:45 and, of course, once he gets up the day doesn't stop until nap time.  And I feel kind of bad since, after I feed baby, I put him with some toys and lie on the couch trying not to fall back asleep!  And I take a nap almost every day!  I hope this isn't just laziness on my part!

One last thing (thanks for bearing in this long!)  Can anyone give me an idea of if this will change when he goes to one nap?  Maybe he'll sleep longer in the morning then?  He's always seemed okay on this amt. of sleep but thought maybe the one nap in the next year will help, too.  He's a really happy guy (and a 20 pounder!)  so I shouldn't be complaining, but don't see an end in sight!  Kind of crazy that 6:30 is considered sleeping in for me!

I'm sorry I cannot give you any advise on the early morning wake up, but I can tell you that you should not feel bad about taking a nap during the day!  You need to re-boost your own energy just as your LO's do so please please do not feel guilty!!

Your routine is very very similar to mine...  my LO is 10 months, although she wakes at 6.30am and goes to bed at 6.30pm.  She eats similarly to your LO although I do give her 3x9oz bottles and she eats chicken and sweet potatoe for lunch (which I was giving to her from 7 months)...   you mentioned that he may be hungry, that is why I added the amount she eats/drinks.

Good luck to you and try to get some rest/relaxation time whenever you can!

honestly?  sounds like that's just the right amount of sleep for him.  especially since he's sleeping so well & waking happy.

yes, there is a chance that he will sleep later when he goes to one nap.  that has been true twice for me now.   ;D
