5 Months on Solids?
« on: November 08, 2006, 14:29:02 pm »
Hi Everyone,

First I want to say THANK YOU.  This is my first post, but I have gotten LOTS of help these past 5 months by reading all the forums. What a great bunch of Moms you all are!

My DS is 5 1/2 months and I started him on solids about 2 weeks ago.  I know that it is a bit early, but he is a big boy (18+lbs) and was showing all the signs of being ready. Two lactation consultants agreed that he was probably ready, although I had some misgivings because of all the health benefits to waiting until 6 months.  I had tried clustering and pumping and continued with the dream feed, but it was like I just couldn't fill him up.  So, he has since had applesauce, banana mixed with breastmilk, and avocado.  He was exclusively bf up until then, and seems to really enjoy tasting new foods.  Generally, he seems to be doing really well with the transition - he is back to 4hrs between meals and just seems to be more satisfied. BUT, the past few days he seems to be having tummy pains shortly after eating (and before he has a BIG poo).  Is this just his system getting used to the new foods, or is he having trouble digesting?  I am not opposed to stopping solids, and trying to go back to clustering, but will this mess him up even more?  I also don't want to take away the solids if that is in fact what he really needs.

Thanks for your help,
Tracy

It is normal for babies to have gas pains and extra gas when first starting solids.  Their little bodies are just getting use to digesting foods vs. liquids.  Veggies tend to cause more gas than fruits.  Just take it slow at with the solids and he should be fine.
