4 feedings to 3, is it too early?
« on: November 09, 2006, 02:05:28 am »
My son is 7 months old.  We're in the process of weaning from breast to bottle, but my question is, is it too early for him to go down to 3 liquid feedings a day?  Right now he nurses twice, when he first wakes up and after his PM nap.  He wants nothing to do with nursing after his nap though and I feel like I'm forcing it on him.  I'm not quite sure how to do it though.  Right now this is how we're doing things:

7:30 - nurse
9:00 - breakfast - cereal and fruit
11:30/12:00ish (depends on how long am nap was) - 7 oz. bottle
12:30 - lunch - fruit or veggie
4:00 - nurse (sort of!)
5:30 - dinner - fruit/veggie or meat
7:00 - 8 oz. bottle

Do I need to just drop the afternoon bottle and push the 11:30 bottle til after lunch closer to when he goes down for his nap?  He usually goes down around 3:00.

The transition from 4 to 3 bottles per day. can sometimes be difficult to spot. The main thing to look for is your LO consistently refusing the 11am feed, this is the time to be changing to 3 bottles.

You would look to drop the 4th bottle in the way you described above.

Just wanted to let you know that my DD dropped to 3 of 8ozs bottles at 5months and she was putting on weight and having lots of wet nappies so it worked for me. She stayed on 3 bottles until 10months.

We dropped down to 3 bottles at 6 months, because our lo was constantly refusing the 11am feed.

Just a thought, I see you are offering a feed at 4:00 after the nap, have you thought about trying to offer it at around 2:30pm before he goes down for his nap?

My Lo's just turned 7 months and had exactly the same experience as Tom Tom's mum. We now have 7am, 3pm and bedtime bottles only. We dropped both the DF and the 11am bottle within about 2 weeks of each other once our LO was on 3 meals per day. To be honest she's been not much interested in the 3pm one lately... so I've been reading the only interested in solids message board too!!  :)

I'm wondering if it has to do with him getting a bottle at 11:00 instead of nursing...this all started when I started weaning him...he's just not as interested in nursing anymore.  I was hoping to not have to quit cold turkey and ease off slowly, but I don't think he's going to let me do that!  I'm thinking he's getting more when he gets a bottle than he does when he nurses.  He takes all 8 oz, but it's more like 4 oz. and then 45 minutes to an hour later (before lunch) I offer him what's left and he finishes then.  So, I should move lunch up to when he wakes up from his morning nap - around 11:30ish and then give him his bottle before he goes down for his afternoon nap (around 2:30)?  I think this will work better for us when he's not nursing anymore....that way I KNOW how much he's taking and when.

That is what we did.

Our DS would have his lunch at 11:30 and then a bottle at 2:30.

You could try it and see how it goes.

Let us know how you get on.

HELP!
My 7 month old currently has a bottle at 6am, 10am, 2pm and 615pm
but recently she has started refusing the 10am and we have been confused and kept trying until she eventually reluctantly takes some at about 11 ish before she has a nap - I am wondering after reading the above posts if she is naturally trying to drop a feed, what routine should I aim for and how can I help her transition?

Bottle 1000 (problem with this one)
Nap 11am - 12pm ish (some times an hour sometimes 2)
Lunch 12pm - 1pm ish
Bottle 2pm ish
Nap 230 ish - this nap has recently become very long, used to be 45 mins and is now 2 - 2 1/2 hours
Dinner 430pm - 530pm

I was also wondering if I needed to help her drop a nap? If so - HOW????

Sorry for butting in , but I'm also wondering the same thing.

Here is our current feeding routine
7- wake and eat 4-8oz
8-solids
11-wake and eat maybe 2oz
12- solids
1-cuing he's hungry and take sdown 4-5oz
3-wake and eat 5oz
6:30- 4-8oz
10:30- df - 6- 8oz
wakes b/tw 2-4 eats 6- 8oz

If I do drop a feed where so i add it in our routine?

Is his intake to erratic?

Should I be working on increasing his intke at one feed?
How do you do this?

Thanks Jenn

R Tulloch,

If you are looking at dropping a nap, I would try and extednd you lo's activity time in the morning and try and put her down for a nap at around 10:00.  How often are her naps 45 minutes in the morning?  If they are constantly at 45 minutes, she may be showing you that she is ready to extend her A time.

Jenn,  I would recommend that the first feed you need to look at eliminating is the night feed.  Once that feed has been cut out you will probably find that he will start taking more during the day.

Have you tried watering this feed down?

Hey Tum Tums Mom-
I haven't tried watering this feed down. He is also teething.  Do you think it's a good time to try watering down his formula? Do you think that it's the night feeding thats throwing off his daily schedule?

Hi, I was just reading this post and I am having the same problem except my lo doesn't want to eat his last bottle.  He eats 5 to 7 ounces at 7,11,3:30, with solids in between but doesn't want his last bottle.  He usually only eat like 4 ounces.  I tried cutting back his solids but it didn't seem to help.
Any ideas about how to rearrange his feeds so that he takes more before bed?  He still wakes once a night but we are not feeding him.  We are trying to get through it with PU/PD so I would love for him to have a full belly when going to bed.

Here is his schedule (on most days)

7 wake, 6 ounces
8:30 solids
9:30 nap
11:00 wake, 5 to 7 ounces
12:30 solids
2:00 nap
3:30 wake, 5 to 7 ounces
4:00 solids
6:15  2 to 4 ounces
6:45 sleep

Thanks, Kim

Kim

His last solids are most likely too close to his milk and/or he is getting too much solids at 4pm and he is not hungry for 615pm milk
