avent Magic Super Sport Cup
« on: November 10, 2006, 19:34:41 pm »
My dd is almost 11 mths old and is has been using a sippy cup for water since 6 months.
She is offered her sippy cup with water at all meals and usually drinks an oz or so from it. She loves her sippy and uses it very well.

I am in the process of transitioning milk in her bottles to milk in a sippy.
She use to take 3 bottles a day, morning/aft/night.
Currently she takes 2 bottles a day with milk 1 in the morning and 1 before bed and for the last couple of weeks I have removed her afternoon bottle and replaced it with a sippy.
Like many other lo's she refuses to drink milk from her sippy.
I have tried everything, different bottles, offering with meal, after meal etc.
Just wondering if I should try to offer her milk in the straw cup by avent. This cup is recommended for 18mth + (does anyone know why)
Has one tried this cup? If so, did you have success? Is she too young to try this cup?

Thanks.

Hi there,

I am not sure why the age is for 18 months and over.

What I could suggest you trying is to try with just a normal straw and cup, and see how well she takes it with you holding the cup.  If you see that she is coping well with it, then it may be worth buying the cup with a straw.

My DS is nearly 16 months, and he drinks juice / water well from his straw sippy cup and we introduced that around 1 - although it was not the Avent one.

Hope this helps

Its labled 18 months probably because its free flow and its not non-spill. A lot of LO's can't us a straw untill after 16-18 months, if your LO can use it then by all means try it :)
We had some avent bottles a friend gave to me. We used the converter lids for the avent bottles that made them into Sippies (the actual sippy cups are WAY to expensive) then we went to a solid spout sippy. Have you tried those at all?
The sippy lid works the same as a bottle nipple almost so it was an easier transition for DD, now she'll use whatever cup we give her.

We currently use the AVENT MagicTM non-spill Cup, DS loves it.

The AVENT MagicTM Sportster on the UK site is non-spill, so I may have to invest in that one soon to try it.

DS has been using a 12+ straw cup since he was about 9months. I am sure he could have handled it before then but I didn't try them.

Just check the link you posted and the cup is non-spill, so certainly try it and if you feel your Lo is too young for it then try it again at a later stage.

I think it has a older age limit, because it seems to have a fast flow.

I thought it was a strw cup from the photo on the link, but it's not.  Just looks like a jumbo sippy. :-\

Yes, that cup is non-spill and it is just a more 'grown-up' version of the other Avent magic cup's. We have one from the UK and got another one in the USA that is just the same. It has a valve and a more open spout like a wide rectangle rather than a spout with 3 hole IYKWIM. The only thing is that if you you melt the spout in the dishwasher it is pretty impossible to find a replacement without buying a whole new cup  ::). We use the green avent spouts with one of ours instead now. It is quite big so it needs tipped up more than a regular cup and might be too heavy when full for your DD. Also it does not have proper handles but I don't know if that is an issue.

I'd maybe try the normal (smaller) Avent cups first. If you have Avent bottles you can just buy the spouts to use with your LO's normal bottle.

Thanks for the replies.

I have been using the avent majic cup for a few months first the white spout and then the green one. DD loves it with water, but refuses it with milk.
Just wondering what else I can do to get her to drink milk not from a bottle. I might try this larger spout with her majic smaller cup and see if she will take to that.
Does anyone have any success stories switching their lo from milk in bottle to milk in a cup? Did a certain cup work better than other for you?

Thanks,
Ann Marie

Ann Marie I managed it with Calum when the site was down.

I use the green spouted magic cup as well and previous (like your LO) he refused milk in it.

I have been using NUK bottles and happened to look on ther website to see thay had brough out a new bottle.  As I had aldready bought 3 of their bottles, I decided to try the new teat.  It is a sippy teat that fits the existing bottles he uses.

I started off by putting the sippy teat on the bottle to start with (sitting on my knee with his back to me, so I can guide in his mouth), at first he would only take an oz or so before I had to put the old 'normal' teat back on, but over a week (if that) he was happily drinking from the bottle with the sippy teat AND starting to hold it himself. At this stage he was still on my lap with his back to me, so I can tilt him back when needed.

Eventually he would hold the bottle with the sippy top for the entire feed, so it got to the stage I could plonk him on a chair, where he could see me and he would drink the milk.     It was when he was ill and I didn't intend to give him milk or I didn't think he would take it that I first tried out of a proper sippy cup and he took it first time.

Using his bottle with the new sippy teat worked great for us, but I made sure that I took it off him as soon as he started to shake it about, because it isn't leak proof.

Hope that makes sense, I have gone on a bit.....

If you can't get sippy teats for your bottles, just try your LO on your lap with his back to you with his normal sippy and even if he takes an 1oz, give the rest in his bottle and keep trying.

Ann Marie,

Have you tried the Avent sippy cups without the valve? That is what we had to do with my DD (though she is breastfed so it was a slightly different problem). Then it is just like a regular (spillable) sippy but she learns that milk come out nice and easy then you can use the valve when needed later.

We have the Avent Magic Super Sport cup and they do have the non-spill valve, but somehow it doesn't seem to work quite well like the normal Avent Sippy Cups.... water keeps on coming off...

I have been using NUK bottles and happened to look on ther website to see thay had brough out a new bottle.  As I had aldready bought 3 of their bottles, I decided to try the new teat.  It is a sippy teat that fits the existing bottles he uses.

I've found the Nuk the most effective one. This is the only sippy that AnnaK likes to drink milk from.

Good Luck!

I haven't removed the valve, I could definitely try that and if that doesn't work, I may switch to a different cup.
