how to make a 4 months old baby to eat every 4 hours?
« on: November 17, 2006, 20:49:19 pm »
hi, I have a 4 months old baby, that used to eat for a 30-40 minutes. in the last 3 weeks she is eating for 3-5 minutes only and this is enough for her for the 3 hours EASY.
do you think she should start a 4 hours EASY and how can I do it?
after 3-5 minutes she eat, she doesn't want to see my breast anymore :(

thank you and have a lovely day!

Your question is really about moving to a 4-hr EASY so I'm going to move you to the EASY board for now if that's OK. People can get to your post from the breastfeeding board.

Me again.
I'm sure you'll get lots of good advice on the EASY board. Have a look at this FAQ which talks about transitioning:

Yaheli,

It may very well be that your lo is looking to transition from the 3 hour EASY.  Although at this age, they can become very efficient little eaters, although I do think that 5 minutes is too short.

You my find that your lo is just not hungry enough at the 3 hour mark.

I would watch her cues very closely though, as you do not want to let her get over stimulated.  If you are finding that the 4 hour EASY is too long for her, it may be worth while going onto the 3.5 hour EASY.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi.. my 4 month old did that when she was around 3 months - would feed for 40 min, then all of a sudden it's hard to keep her on for 10 minutes. I find that letting her just stop feeding, then trying again later (10 min?) sometimes helps. Also I found feeding her lying down helped her to feed longer as I didn't have to hold her struggling. At this age, they get really distracted by everything, so it's hard keeping their attention. Dark room, low noises, and feeding them when they're not extra tired or cranky helps too! Hope that helps  :)

Hi, thank you all!
now I am absolotly confuse, cause on her book she said to feed the baby every 3 hours, than at the evening twice: 5 & 7 or 6 & 8 which I do. my EASY goes like that: 6,9,12,15,18,20,23. and I saw that it should be 7,10,13,16,19,22. and I want that too before I transfer her to a 3.5 or a 4 hours EASY.
but she is allways hungry at 6pm and 8pm and 6am! how could I do it?

by the way, I tried to breatfeeding her at a dark room and low noises and it's help her to eat much more time.
thank you.

Your lo may be going through her 4 month growth spurt - this is why she is so hungry.

If it helps feeding her in a quite darkened room, I would keep it like that for a while and see how she goes.  If she is taking more, then it may be easier to transistion her when you are ready to do so.
