Please help
« on: November 18, 2006, 06:52:25 am »
So for awhile now lo has been waking at about 5am every morning.  If I feed (bf) he generally goes back to sleep.  But he will also wake around 2-3am.  If I have fed him then I try not to feed at five.  He has not been going back to sleep.  This morning.  I tried for an hour to get him to resettle before giving him a feed.  He didn’t go back to sleep but stopped crying I’ve put him back in bed and won’t get him up for the day till 7am.

I don’t know what to do.  He is almost six months.  Is a bad napper too and I’m not coping tired all the time and getting very frustrated! I know he is overtired too.  But the staying awake is a new one.

HELP I haven’t the stamina for PU/PD and since I don’t feel I can stick with it I don’t think I should do it now and again.

If ds is waking between 5 and 5.20 what time should I do the wake to sleep? 4am?  Do I stir him of wake him properly?

So is he waking at 2 or 3 and then going back to sleep and you feed him at 5?  Did I read that correctly?

FWIW Bram had a night feed right up until he was 6 months old.  Some babies need it longer than others.

can you post what your typical day looks like?

Hello,

Thanks for your reply.

I think what has thrown me is the fact that ds wants to start his day at 5ish!

Since I introduced a dream feed not long ago the frequent nightwaking reduced dramatically to about two on average.   It’s not so much the night feeds that worry me although since being on here I have realised he should probably be only having one at the most.

The issue is since I’ve tried to cut one of the night feeds out he’s started to stay awake on the second wake up.

My EASY isn’t really working.  Basically I have to follow EASASAEAS feeds are generally 3.5 to 4 hours apart.  I aim for ds to be asleep for the night by 7.30pm but he tends not to go down till about 8.15pm despite starting our bedtime routine at 5.30pm!

When he sleeps in I get him up between 7 and 7.30 although we’re not managing to make it to 7am these days.

He sleeps between 20 and 45 minutes when I do manage to get him to nap.  It is extremely rare for him to take naps longer than 45 minutes.   He often wakes happy although sometimes doesn’t last the full two hours of A but occasionally he will stay up for four before having a nap and not seem tired.

Looking at what I’ve written I think I need to take a step back and take note of what is happening day and night – I guess I’m trying to tackle everything at once when there are a number of problems.

If I’m finding the routine (or rather lack of) difficult he surely will be!!!

Thank you again for replying.

Hi

Well I don't know why but he decided to sleep past his usual wake up of 5ish this morning!

Thanks for the support.  I'm not going to worry about the 2am wake up unless this becomes a habit at the moment I feel the time he wakes are different enough although always between 2 and 3am that I shouldn't worry yet.

I hope this morning wasn't a one off.  Like I've said in another post.  I'm going to ease off trying to fix things for a few days and document what we have been doing.  I think I'm trying to fix to many things at once.

Thank you!

Good idea to document for a few days you may notice a pattern emerge that you can work around.  I think sometimes we moms get a bit too obssesed with the sleeping through the night.  Keep me posted
