Cold at night - what to dress baby in?
« on: November 20, 2006, 20:17:13 pm »
Hi - I have been having trouble lately keeping my 9mo old DD warm at night. I think it has been waking her up at night, as she kind of gets whiney (and ends up crying out) and when I go in she has kicked off all the blankets. As soon as I cover her back up, she goes back to sleep.

What do others use to dress/cover their babies? (especially those old enough to kick off blankets?)

Have you tried sleeping bags? We found them great.

Try the sleeping bags and stick to them as long as possible.  I used them with Alex when she was young enough not to really notice, but as soon as she could stand she hated them and I can't get her to put one on now.  She always kicks the blankets off and is cold during the night.  If I wake in the night I go and check her and she is usually at the other end of the cot, so I just move her under the covers.
To go to bed she wears vest, pyjamas and socks but she takes her socks off too, she isn't too warm under the blankets, she is nice and comfortable, but if she is out of them, she will wake within the hour.  I guess I am not really destined to have a full nights sleep until she turns 21!!!lol

DS is still in his grobag at 2 YO. Grobag do a fleecy version which is cosy but quite dear. He also has a backup from Sugre d'Orge with fleecy arms. The grobag doesn't cover the arms so he wears a PJ top over his underwear.
The beauty of the sleeping bag is that if they need a cuddle at night you just pick them up and comfort them and just drop them back in their cots all ready for sleep and there is no change in temperature because they are still snug in their bags (yes, I am a big fan - I want a grobag for me too  ;D)

I found fleece crib sheets at http://www.fleecebaby.com .  Then put Charlotte in a blanket sleeper.  I cover her up after she is asleep

DD has been in a Grobag since 9 weeks old- she would wake every night at least twice cos she'd wriggled out of her blankets... the first night she was in her Grobag she slept all night long and has done ever since!  ;D

Wow - sounds like this "grobag" is the way to go. A friend of mine made me something similar out of polar fleece, but it doesn't have the shoulder straps (just a bit of elastic) so it always slips off at night.

Thank you all so much for your posts - I will order one today!!!!

Hi Sondra
they've got a website and they supply a free nursery thermometer with each grobag- it tells you on the reverse what to dress lo in for different temperatures, for example if the room is 18 degrees C then lo should wear a long sleeve vest with a pyjama top. This is really helpful especially if the weather is really changeable! The grobags come in different togs, we use 2.5 tog in the autumn/ winter/ spring and 1 tog in the summer. They also do a 0.5 tog if it gets really hot where you are but I've never needed one in the UK  ::)
I have 2 x 2.5 and 2x1 tog so I can wash one and wear one- they do add up as are not that cheap but are soooooooo worth it!
