Please help my best friend! ( toddler sleep)
« on: November 20, 2006, 20:19:47 pm »
My best friend's little boy is not even two yet and already seems to be dropping his nap. She just had another baby and  at least three days out of the week he is not sleeping. It is driving her nuts and I thought we could come up with some suggestions for her. He gets up at 8, lunch at  12 and in bed 12:30/1; bedtime is at 8.  I am at a loss as my little on is such a sleep hogger! She always puts him in his crib and sometimes he is happy to lie there and talk to himself for two hours; quiet time but it is not sleep time!

My thought is naptime is too early and he is just not tired yet.  My 27 month old has been pushing her nap back lately (yesterday she didn't go down until 1:45, although she had been up at 6:30).  There's only 5 hours from wakeup to nap maximum and he probably needs at least 5.5 to 6 at this point, possibly even more. so I would suggest she push the nap back to see if that will help.

Tyler's been an inconsistent napper since about 18 mo. That's just the way he is, and no adjustment in nap timing has made a difference. On the days that he doesn't nap, he's more than happy to hang out in his room talking to himself, and bedtime moves forward to make up for the lost nap. Ever since he started doing this, we've just let him be. If he chooses not to nap, that's fine. We figured it would be good to keep the habit of going to his room for quiet time every afternoon, and now that he's older, I'm glad we did. We keep books in there and he can spend an hour or 2 by himself recharging. Not as good as a nap, but better than nothing!

Honestly if he is sleeping 12 hours at night then it is actually quite reasonable for some boys (more so than girls according to the stuff I read) to drop naps around that age.
Has she tried cutting back to 11 hours overnight say waking at 7.30am & bedtime at 8.30pm.
for a 2yo 12.5 hours sleep in 24 hours is average/normal, so 12 overnight doesn't leave much for a nap, so to me it makes sense he only needs it every second day.
I'd suggest she tried for a 1.30/2pm Nap for an hour & a half hour later bed time.
It may also be that because she has the baby he isn't really getting the physical & mental stimulation that he needs to make him tired enough to need that nap. So she could work on that... I know with both my boys busy mornings make better naps.
But all that said some kids, like my niece do drop naps at 2yo
