Deviating from the 4-S's...is there a prop in here somewhere???
« on: November 21, 2006, 02:30:52 am »
Hello,
My name is Christine, FTM to 5 month old Madeline and I'm new to BW, but I have read Tracy's book and watch the show. Wish I would have had the book before I gave birth, unfortunately only got it 2 weeks ago.

Madeline was a pretty good sleeper from very early on. She was able to sleep long stretches at night and most of the time she fell asleep in her cot on her own. Recently, some sleep problems have surfaced such as short naps 20-45 min and early wake time 4am. These problems seemed to coincide with the introduction of veggies (doc's orders)
Schedule:
wakes anywhere from 4am-6:30am
AM 7 bottle
7:30-8:30 playtime and cereal in between
8:30-9:00 wind down
9:00-10:30 Nap
11:00 Bottle
11:30-12:30 Activity and veggie
PM 12:30 wind down
1:00-2:30 Nap
3:00 Bottle
3:30-5:00 activity
5:00-5:45 cat nap (sometimes)
6:00-6:30 Bath
6:45- bottle
6:45 wind down and asleep usually in 20-30 minutes
10:30 DF

I am trying to deal with one thing at a time. EASY seems to be ok but now I would like to work on 4-S's

My question is on the winding down....please tell me, I'm I being a prop in some way???
My goal is to be more consistent with the 4-S's.

Setting stage: room is dark, very little stimulus in the room.
Swaddling: never really did it. Madeline is a Spirited baby and is extremely active and never took to swaddling ever, not even in the hospital, the nurses were a little shocked. So, I put her in a sleep positioner and tuck a lightweight blanket around her.
****Is the wedge a prop?****
Sitting: do it till she fusses
Shush pat: I pat until she starts burrowing her head into my shoulder. No shush because the shush seems to stimulate her even more.

Sometimes the patting will just settle her and then she starts talking to and cuddling with her lovie. At that point I leave her room (cause this can go on for an hour) and she just falls asleep on her own.
Other times, I lie her down, she cries and I turn her on her side and pat her some more and she falls asleep with my hand on her back, so am I a prop here?

I appreciate hearing any thoughts. :)

I am just wondering why you had to intro solids so early?

She's 17lbs and finishing 8 oz at every feed. Doc doesn't want her to gain too much and the solids curb the amount of formula intake.

the swaddle you'll wean when LO is ready.

pat/shush will be weaned out also.  you'll still comfort LO in crib but as get older, possibly use pu/pd if necessary.  between those two techniques, LO will learn to settle herself.

i still use sound.  but she can sleep without it.

for the moment, LO needs the things you do.  as she gets older and learns to sleep by herself, the 4 S's can be weaned if you want.
