3hr easy when switching day for night
« on: November 23, 2006, 15:19:13 pm »
Hi Everyone,

At week 5 my lo still has day for night switched even though we follow almost an exact 3hr easy during the day.  He is usually wide awake for a couple hours twice a night.  So I want to follow what Tracy says in the book about limiting naps to 45mins-1hr.  But how do I stay with the 3hr easy this way?

Any suggestions are appreciated, Thanks Tarri

Tarri,

I had the same problem when ds was newborn. I actually followed my ped's advice in not interacting with him AT ALL at night.  We had a night light in the bathroom which gave me enough light to not fall over the bassinette, his diaper changes were in slow motion and most important we made no eye contact nor spoke out loud at all. During the day I would wake him when his it was time in his EASY routine.

It took about 2 weeks for him to switch back and sleep more at night.

hi Tarri

Beca here has given you a great advice I think.
we had the same problems and I think most of moms and their babies have similar experiences as well. at 5 weeks you still have a very very young LO who doesn't understand day is day and night is night.

just like Beca suggested- keep your night actions [feedings, nappy change] very low key, do not light the room up and... be positive. it will all work out for you  :-*

Monika and Beca, thanks so much for replying.  I will try to keep night time less active.  I have been bfing infront of the TV at night.  But I'm willing to sacrifice this for a baby that sleeps instead.  I'll try feeding in his room tonight.

Also I did limit his naps a bit today.  They were all around 1.5hrs or less except the last one which was 2 hours cause I sooo wanted to eat dinner with the rest of the family in peace.

I hope he turns around soon.

Thanks again ,Tarri

Hi Paula,

I had a good night right after your post.  I fed him by the night light in his room and he slept all night.  But the last two nights we've had a really really hard time from the feed around 7pm till midnight.  He cries and cries almost non-stop.  His eyes just pop wide open and there doesn't seem to be any way to get him sleepy.  We've tried feeding him more or not, trying just for some happy activity time but no luck.  And I have been feeding him in his room still but I have to leave his room when he starts his crying fits cause my toddler is trying to sleep in the next room.  My fear is that colic is developing.  Didn't have it with the toddler so I'm not sure what to do.

(((HUGS)))
LO's brain starts to produce Melatonin from 6weeks on. Once melatonin starts to appear in LO's body, it's easier for LO to sleep through the night. Remember to keep the room really dark in the night. Take your LO out for a little walk early in sunlight in the morning. This will help as well.

Tarri,

Hugs, I am sorry to hear that you are having such a rough time.

Have you popped over to our Colic and Reflux boards?  I am sure you can get some great advice from there.  I have attached a link to the board.

Please keep us posted on how they get on.
