Not sure why he wakes
« on: November 26, 2006, 14:18:47 pm »
Is there a logical reason why DS might wake between 9-10 hours after going to bed? I know that wakings early in the evening are usually due to overtiredness-any reason for 9-10 hours after?

DS does this A LOT. I am trying to understand why. He does it regardless of how he has slept during the day. Sometimes, he sleeps great in the day and still wakes. It could be hunger I suppose but I try to feed him as much as possible in the day and he can still wake. I really don't want to encourage him to wake at 5am ish by feeding him regularly at this time but also don't want to not feed him if he is genuinely hungry.  :(

When he does wake at this time, it usually takes him over an hour to get back to sleep (even if I do feed him) and then I have to rouse him from a deep sleep later because I have to go to work. At the weekends when he does it, he will go back to sleep and then wake about 8-8.30am.

Would w2s work? Its not the exact same time every night but is usually after about the same number of hours after going to bed eg, when bedtime is 8pm, its between 5-6am. When bedtime is 7pm, its between 4-5am.
Thanks
Cath, 33

I suspect it's habitual. I would try W2S like you say, depending on when bedtime is.

I agree but I would also suggest a more stable bedtime. Make bedtime and bedtime routine the same every night and things will smooth out for you.
10 hours may in fact be the amount of night sleep he wants. What you might need to do is stick with an 8PM bedtime and have start of day at 6AM. If he wakes earlier and is not crying leave him be. Don't go to him at all if he doesn't cry. He might just suprise you and go to sleep on his own.
Try w2s and see if it helps, but 10 hours is still a good long sleep.
Maybe leave him to sleep a little longer on the weekends and catch up on some ZZ's yourself.

Thanks ladies.

I would be more than happy with 10 hours if he had slept well in the day time but when he goes to daycare he only sleeps about 1.5 hours total so I know 10 hours at night isn't enough for him. That is also why its hard to keep the same bed time too because his bedtime always depends on his day sleep. Its always between 7-8 though and the routine is the same each night.

He did the same again last night. I think it was almost to the minute-9 hours after he went to sleep. Will try w2s tonight at 8 hours. Fingers crossed!

Typically, the first night he woke at 2am until 3.30am! Needless to say, I didn't think it was worth doing w2s. We did it for the next 2 nights (1 of which he woke when I did it-another 1.5 hour wake  ::) but next night (last night) he slept through for 10.5 hours!  ;D I still think he needs more as he only had 1.5 hours total all day (daycare) but at least its better than 9 hours. I'm going to keep my eye on the situation but so far so good. Thanks for asking.  :D
