You would think that with this being my 4th child I would know something as basic as the best way to utilize the pump, but I don't! Please help! :)

Quick background (old timers feel free to skip this section!) is that I bf my 1st baby for 12 months with no problems, but never needed to pump and only tried a couple of times with no success. He wouldn't take a bottle anyways, and with just 1 child it wasn't a problem to always be available to nurse him. With baby #2, it was the breastfeeding experience from h*ll and we stopped just before 3 months (super long story, all that matters is YES I got help, NO I didn't just give up because formula was easier, YES it was the right decision for my circumstances at the time :) ). I only used my pump twice during that time, no success either time. With baby #3, bf went great, but my attitude about it was all wrong and we completely stopped at 6 months. I later regretted stopping and attempted to relactate, but I wasn't dedicated enough to make that work. In doing this though -- I rented a hospital grade pump and was able to see and feel the difference in how it works, and I can understand why I wasn't able to get more milk with my other pump.

Going into this 4th bf experience, I have a much better attitude and hope to go longer. :) One thing that I think will help this is pumping -- because life now is more comlex than when I just had 1, and sometimes I need DH to feed the baby. I did this with #3 except we used formula, I think we started 1 bottle per day and 1 for the dream feed around 3 or 4 months. What all "the books" say is true though -- it was easy to slip in another bottle here and there, and before we knew it I was only bf 2x per day and my supply got lower and we ended up stopping sooner than I had planned.

So today I bought a Medela Pump In Style Advance, and truth be told I have no idea what to do with it. I mean -- I get how to physically USE the thing, but when? how often? what type of bags store best? how much milk should I keep on hand? which bottles/nipples are best? I bought these two, I like the second one better, but I'm worried the short nipple will cause baby to not pull it into his mouth far enough and may transfer that onto my breast. :(

Ok Colleen what the heck are you doing up so late? It's 9:30 here on the west coast and you just posted this! go to bed!!!!!!! :)
I borrowed my sil's pump in style this time and I liked it a lot. Before that I had a medela pump that let you do both sides at once but wasn't too strong. With ds I rented a hospital grade pump and it was awesome.
So, when I pumped I did it several different ways. The days I was working when Monica was a baby I got up early at pumped, then she got up and fed 1-2 hours later. This worked well because first thing in the morning is a pretty easy time to get yield but it also means, well, getting up early!
When I wasn't working, I would pump 1-2 hours after the first feed of the day. I had good success with this as well as they usually didn't drain me after the first feed of the day. (Another important tip is to eat lots of fattening ice cream!!!  ;D)
I never had success pumping in the late afternoon or evening. Got very little out! I also clusterfed a lot so it was hard to fit in a pump session in the midst of that.
I know some people pump one side while the baby is feeding off the other side. I'm kind of a clutz so I didn't even try it! But many have done it with great success!
Ok just writing this makes me have little twinges of wanting another wee one so I'm going to sign off so none of your wacky fertility vibes come through this way!
Have fun!

Wow... Colleen... you brave woman...4 lo's...Yikers!

Well, I'm no expert, but we did have some issues with BF'ing in the beginning so I had alot of help from the team of LC's in my community health dept.  So I'll share what they told me.

Pumping can definitely improve your milk supply, but mostly, suckling increases milk supply so keep that in mind as well.  I still pump to this day and it's mostly to have some independence and to be sure she's still interested in her sippy cup as well.

How- this depends on whether your baby will be feeding on both sides or not.  You may pump both sides or just the one they don't feed from that time.
When-you can pump right after a feed to ensure the breast is emptied, especially helpful in the beginning when they are just learning to breastfeed.  When my lo started sleeping through the night early I would pump in the middle of the night to increase milk supply.
How often- that depends on your purpose for pumping at various stages.  If you want to pump to increase supply in the beginning, pump after every feed.  If you want to pump just to store milk for bottles, then it depends on how much you get from one pumping session, as you may only need to do it once.  The LC's said that if I'm pumping for storage, to pump after the first morning feed when you have the most amount of milk, your body will adjust to the supply.  So if you are feeding on one side, you can pump the other right after you breast feed the baby in the morning...or if you are feeding from both sides, you can pump both sides an hour after you breast feed first in the morning.
Nipple-I used Playtex Natural Latch and Advent.  You purchases sound good though.  You do want something that most resembles the breast, especially in the beginning, but you may have to try different ones.  I like the one with the multiple holes...cool!  R u in the UK?  Nothing like that in Canada...
Bags-You can buy special storage bags..didn't have money for that, so I bot bottle liner bags and frozen in those then put them in a ziplock and into another ziplock..never had any freezer burn at all
Milk on hand-I usually have milk for a week on hand as I pump, but I only give one feeding a day, if that with a bottle, and I also freeze it in cubes for cereal.

A lot of these questions about how often and when is going to depend on the baby and how well she/he does at the breast.  I was so ready to give up bf'ing actually...But the LC's convinced me to stick with it...I just wanted to pump and give her the milk..but they said, no...wait...relax...she's not in any trouble, lets figure this out...so we did that...and all is great!  All was great at 2 months.  So it took a while for me to relax about everything...and I AM a first time mom.. ;)

Hope I was able to help a little.  Good luck with your full house ;)

Typing one handed (feeding baby with other), so pardon the shortness

If I pump an hour after first feeding, I can get enough for a feeding (at least at this stage, when #1 was eating more it took more than one pumping session)

I keep enough on hand (or try to) to last a few days JIC something happened where I was unavailable

I use the bags made by The First Years, never had trouble with them

We used Dr. Brown's bottles and Avent, no trouble there either -- most guidelines say to wait a few weeks before introducing (haven't yet with #2, planning on it soon)

Good luck!

Congrats! I can barely manage 2- you are to be admired. I love kellymom.com for pumping advice- here's the link- http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/index.html
Alot of your questions depend on what you are looking for from pumping- occassional bottle vs regular replacement bottle (like with working mom's). Basically if you pump one hour after nursing sessions, you should have enough supply for next feeding. I always found first thing in morning, before my bed, and in the middle of night to work well also (of course I was stock piling for my return to work). I never had a nipple problem with either of mine-  I just used the slowest nipple I could find. I really liked hte milk storage bags. I would pump into bottles and then transfer to Medela bags in 2/4 oz increments. Then place several bags in a plastic box- label box with date and place in separate freezer. (again stock piling for return to work). I adored by Medela PIS- it was a good enough pump for me. Here's the link to FAQ also

I don't check as often as some mod so feel free to PM if you have a particular concern. But other moms here are great with pumping advice also.
