Reaction to Transition Formula?
« on: November 27, 2006, 21:07:33 pm »
DS was exclusively bf until 4 months at which time I introduced Nestle Good Start formula at the df, offering 4 oz of the formula mixed with 4 oz ebm.  Over the past 2 months I have slowly weaned him from bfing to that same formula and starting two weeks ago he was exclusively on the formula.  As he is almost 11 months, I decided to introduce the Nestle Follow-Up Transitions formula.  He has been on that formula for 2 full days.  The past two mornings, he has had 3 very mushy poops within 2 hours of waking up in the morning and about 6 poops a day, compared to 2-3 usually.  He also has a bit of diaper rash, it isn't bad at all but definitely something that concerned me as he has had very few bouts of this in the past and those that he has had have been very minor.  Any thoughts or experiences similar to this?  I'm not sure whether he is having a reaction to the formula or if it is just coincidence with another bug of some sort.  He has had a lot of dairy over the past 3 months - yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese - and has no reactions to them.  To be on the safe side, I picked up another small tin of Good Start and am going to give this to him for a few days to see if everything clears up and then I will try the Transitions again for a few days to see what happens.  The poops are the only thing I'm noticing, he hasn't been vomiting or seems in any sort of discomfort.

I believe the milk proteins are partially broken down in Good Start but not in the follow up formula so it could be a slight intolerance to the new formula and/or his system adjusting. Why are you using transition formula? IMO it's mainly a marketing gimmick and would instead recommend staying on Good Start until you transition to whole milk.

I was switching to it kind of as a follower since many of my friends with lo's that age are switching, it's a few dollars cheaper than the other AND my dr. asked at the last appt. if we had switched over to it yet.  I am not impressed with the corn syrup as the second ingredient.  What is up with that!?  I wish I had checked out the label when I picked it up!  In the Good Start it is whey proteins which are gentler on the tummy but in the Transition one, the main ingredient is skim milk powder.  We'll see how it goes being switched back to Good Start but DH accidentally made Transitions for his bedtime bottle even though I told him not to  >:( and I didn't realize it until he was almost done it and I saw the tell tale froth that this one has but Good Start does not.  I kind of wondered what the big deal was about switching to this one when he gets lots of calcium from yogurt and cheese, anyways, and is only a month off of whole milk.  Oh well, I guess I'll keep up this plan and keep him off the Transitions for 3 days and then try again if his bum and bms clear up.  If, after that, I see another problem with the Transitions, we'll ditch it and stick with Good Start until we're done with formula at the end of December.

I was going to switch my LO to the Nestle transition formula but after reading & comparing all the ingredients & nutritional info to the regular good start I decided not too & will just go to whole milk when it's time.

You know, I should have just done that from the start!  I just made a dumb assumption that it would be fine because it seemed like the logical step to take (very good marketing, indeed  :-\).  I am reassessing the situation, I don't want to see him uncomfortable if what we were already using was fine!

I really don't understand the whole "transitional formula" thing.  It costs less so I don't get why they would want to market it & have people buy it over the regular good start?

When I take my DS in for his 9 month check up I'm going to talk to the Dr about this new formula & see what she says.  I don't know anyone who's used it & just kept their babies on regular formula.

See...and the whole reason I jumped into it was because everyone I knew was talking about going onto it so being a formula newbie after bfing for 10.5 months and only supplementing the df with formula, I just thought that was the natural progression.  My only guess as to why they are marketing it is that it says 6-18 months on it so maybe they are hoping that they can keep moms supplementing with it until 18 months instead of going fully to whole milk at a year.  Maybe by making it a bit cheaper than the other formula the company thinks it's incentive to keep people buying it a bit longer?  Just a thought to ponder!   ;D

Well, decided to totally kick the Transition formula to the curb, lol!  I had to give it to him twice today because I ran out of the little tin of regular stuff and it was storming outside.  Just from that little bit his bum got red again so enough is enough!  Now we're back to good start and that's where we'll stay until 1 year!
