Is this normal?
« on: November 27, 2006, 22:32:24 pm »
My toddler has just turned 2. He has been very good with his food and has always had a good appetite, up until the last week or so. He seems to be fine in himself, not ill or anything, but he has started refusing most of his food, even the things he usually loves. He also spits out alot of it, even though he is familiar with it. I don't make much of a fuss about it, and just ignore it when he spits the food out, as I don't want to make it into an issue. I'm not sure if I am handling this the right way, and whether other people have found their "good eaters" have suddenly become fussy, when they turned 2!

Any ideas most welcome  :D

Have you seen the support thread for Moms of picky eaters in the Eating for toddlers forum?
You will find great support there, I know I have!

Another thought I had was has he got his 2nd year molars yet?

Hi just wanted to say my now 3 year old is an awesome eater but at that age she went through a funny patch... I spoke to the CHN she said it was ok and as long as she had a good meal everyother day then it was ok... she said some toddlers only eat well every couple of days.... but to keep offering there three meals etc, but like you said not make a huge deal out of it.  Tiahnee is now 3 and she is an awesome eater she has 3 meas a day and 2 snacks (fruit or yoghurt) maybe he is not feeling well? or as binxyboo said maybe teeth?

ment to ad we went thorugh a stage when all tia would eat was macoroni and cheese this lasted a few weeks I used to add different theings to it ie: broccoli carrots zucchini etc, but seriously she ate this for dinner everynight for a while it was the only way we could get dinner into her LOL

Could he be working on his two-year molars?

Hi thanks everyone for your speedy replies! I'm not sure if it is molars or not, he seems to go through phases when i think he is teething, and he tells me they hurt occasionally, but nothing seems to be happening. He seems to eat better at nursery, (which he did today thankfully) whether this is because he sees the others eating....the only meal we ever have as a family is breakfast unfortunately. I have asked what they do at nursery and it seems to be no different as to how I might encourage him. I don't feel he is using food to manipulate the situation.
Katie thanks for the reasurrance of your story! I think I might just have to ride this one out.

To alleviate the stress on you, if anything, how about leaving him with a selection of foods on his table (when he's not at nursery), so that he chooses what he wants to eat when he wants to eat ?
I know it's difficult not to worry, but I've met Jacob and he's obviously happy and healthy despite his food intolerance problems so you are doing something right already !

Yes, that is a thought, I might give it a go.

Totally normal.  Mine still does this off and on.  Just today he told me he "doesnt like cucumber"  although he ate some last week ;D.

All you can do it offer him healthy choices and he will eat or not eat as much as he wants ;D
